Naomi Baron, a linguist at American University, detects worrying trends that relate to what the culture of cellphones, pagers, laptops, and wireless has done to the minds of the young:
quote:
Society’s attitude towards language has changed, she thinks. For about 250 years, the consensus in Western societies has been that grammar, syntax and spelling matter, and that rules have to be observed. That consensus now appears to be at risk.

The consensus that supports syntax itself is at risk! People who like to read this sort of alarmist stuff will find that here they have exactly the sort of alarmist stuff they like to read. But me? I’m a skeptic. I think it’s a load of nonsense.

I've read Naomi Baron's From Alphabet to Email but she doesn't talk about linguistic whateverism in that book. The closest she comes to it is asking for more formality in email. Anyway, another great Pullum rant.

Good fun! I really love reading Pullum's rants against prescriptivists! That I tend to agree with everything he says no doubt makes it easier to like his writing ... Smile

I suppose that's what I was referring to with my discussion of the similarity between descriptivists and prescriptivists.

At any rate, it was a nice article, and I learned 2 new words, clitic and copula.

BTW, z, I am quite impressed that LanguageLog has your Blog listed. Congrats!

clitic

Enclitic and proclitic, along with clitic, are great words to drop at a cocktail party. According to Wikipedia there are also mesoclitics and endoclitics. I won't touch copula.

Ta. Mark is a nice fellow.

The article is warning us that text messaging is destroying language and thought, without any evidence. Pullum is refuting this argument reasonably. I just don't see the similarity.

We've talked about this, goofy. I generally agree with you, though sometimes I think the descriptivists get carried away with snarkiness, rather than keeping the discussion scholarly, which we all know they can do.

On the other hand, that is human nature and entertaining (something like Truss perhaps?). I'm just saying...

Change of heart, sparked by a PM by Goofy.

I very much enjoy Pullum, and he was being lighthearted, but not snarky. I was pushing the envelope on that.
