Bluffing Game: philluminist
I've moved this game here to avoid conflict with limericks.

I've given a word in the title and your mission is to send me your definition - without looking up in a dictionary (assuming you could find it there) via PM to me. There is no limit to the idiocies you can produce but they should at least be capable of fooling the other competitors.

So let's see your definitions for "philluminist".

You'll need to keep a check on it, proof. Things tend to get lost in "wordgames" because the other threads here are the fast moving ones with lots of posts like the dis- thread. IIRC that's why the other one was split off from it to begin with.

Anyway. I sent you a couple.

Are you sure you spelled the word correctly, Proof? I know a word, "phillumenist", that I think you meant.

Anyway, I'll send in a PM.

We can safely assume that arnie knows the answer then. But that's kind of a given. Big Grin

Arnie's just carrying on in the old bardic tradition. He just chose to memorise the OED instead of ancient sagas. Big Grin

The OED is a trifle large. I've only managed a condensed dictionary. Smile

Is that like condensed milk?

For our new members...

The official aim of this game is twofold. First you are trying to fool as many people as you can with your definition and second you are trying to select the correct definition from all those provided.

The actual aim of the game has mutated into an attempt to find a word that arnie doesn't know.

Oh, I like #8. If that isn't the right one, it should be !
September 04, 2016, 22:28
BobHale
I absolutely know it's wrong but I shall, as is my habit, choose the one that I like the best, which is number 7.

I'm with Haberdasher on this one. #8 for me.
Several entries referring to illumination, yet nobody suggested it might be a member of the Illuminati sect.

PHILLUMINIST - One who throws light on the acid/base balance of a chemical solution

..That was, of course, meant to imply that the original target had been spelled "pH-illuminist"

Bah! Red Face

I missed this thread having any updates somehow, so I didn't have a chance to post. I happened to know that a phillumenist is a collector of matchbook covers.

He knew it on August 15th, too, when he suggested you may have misspelled the word.
September 24, 2016, 02:59
BobHale
Of course he knew it. This is arnie we're talking about - arnie whose first word as a baby wasn't "Mama" or "Dada", it was "primogenitor".

I was jokingly referring to the thread wherein we discussed Limbaugh's knuckle-dragging acolytes.

And, chances are, he knew that "dada" referred to an early 20th C. art movement, thus had no connection to his male progenitor. Wink

Oh, my. I missed this game and didn't send in a daffy. So sorry, Proof! I am thinking it's not about light since there are so many here about it, but finally settled on #8. It just couldn't be #7, which is the only one not related to light. #8 is indirectly related, but I chose it anyway.

And, Proof, we'd love for you to write limericks for us again. Been missing you!

Now I see you had already reported the right one. Shoot - I would have won!
