I think we all are having trouble with the new times. I think we should just go back to 12:00 on Saturday and let it go. All the complainers about the times don't seem to join us anyway.

Let's leave it as it always was...12:00 noon, Central time, which is 18:00, GMT, on Saturdays on Wordcraft. If you come to the chat and no one is there, give it a few minutes.

I hope to see a few of you here tomorrow at the traditional time and place!

When I try to enter the WC chatroom I get a brief twirling image of a person with arms raised, then that goes away and a tiny lightbulb image appears in the upper left. When I try to enter dialog nothing happens. Unless one of you can figure out what I'm doing wrong I'll have to be listed as one of the complainers and leave it at that. Frown

If I right click while in the Chat Room window it thinks I'm in Abobe Flash Player. Helllllp!

Hmm, Maybe arnie can help? Perhaps you need to download a new version of Adobe Flash Player?

I am in there now with no takers. I'll stay another 5 minutes or so, and then I'll leave as I am pretty bored with me, myself & I! Wink

I did forget about poor Bob when I posted above about sticking to our old time. Sorry, Bob! You've always been a loyal chatter, and we'd love to keep you. Bob, would 11:00, CST, which is 17:00, GMT, be too late on Saturdays? If so, I think we should move to Sundays. I agree with arnie that the changes have been confusing, but if we pick one and stick with it, it should be fine.

I downloaded an updated Flash Player, then went to Chat. I saw 2 people were logged in, but could not access it. !@(*&&^$#$#!)*

Geoff, that's exactly what used to happen to me in the UK which is why we switched to gmail.
Of course, here in China I can get in on wordcraft but not gmail and there is no really convenient time.

Kalleh, That's still 1 a.m on Sunday for me, which means we won't finish till around 2 a.m.
It's possible but only as an occasional thing.
For me to get to bed before midnight you would have to be chatting at 9.a.m on Saturday.

The same time problems will occur if you switch to Sunday but compounded by my having to get up earlier on Monday to teach.

Additionally, though next weekend is possible the two after that are Christmas and New Year and my being in China is NOT going to prevent my going out celebrating. In fact, because my flat mate is from Wisconsin we are planning for new to start celebrating at about 8 O'clock local Chinese time and finish shortly after Midnight CST which makes 18 hours of celebration.

In short I don't think there is going to be a sensible time that includes me so go ahead and organise without me. I'll join in if and when I can.

Not sure what to do. Geoff can't get onto our chat, but can get onto gmail chats.

We seem to be where we were when we first started this conversation. It isn't helped by the fact that my aerobics class is 9:30-10:45 on Saturdays.

Okay. I have been in touch with Bob, and he tells us to go ahead because he often won't be able to join us. That makes sense, being in China and all!

So...here's the final chat decision. Let's go with an hour earlier than our normal time to give Bob a chance. When I get home from my class, instead of showering, I'll get right on the chat. That is, let's plan for Saturdays at: 9 am, PST; 10 am, MST; 11 am, CST, and 12 noon EST. That is 17:00 GMT. Hopefully we'll get used to the new times, in time. I will let CW and WM know.

That's because the chat room uses Flash. I've no idea why it doesn't load properly for you, though. You could try checking if you have the latest version; it won't do any harm. Go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

We spent a lot of time trying to sort out Bob's problem (which was seemingly the same) a while back with the Social Strata, or whatever they were at the time, helpdesk, with no luck.

As my dad would say, Piffle! He didn't use it correctly...he meant it to mean "Darn!"

Bob, I can't figure out a good time that works for you and the rest of us. If I didn't have my stupid class on Saturday mornings, it could work.

For now, let's leave the chats at 11:00, CST, which is 17:00, GMT, just for a little stability. I am open to changing them, if someone comes up with a different suggestion.

As with the last few times I have stayed up late, I came, I waited twenty minutes and I went.

It seems rather pointless that I bother because there is never anyone there and it is very late for me.

Oh well, c'est la vie.

We are having difficulties, aren't we?

I am going to officially call off today's chat! Next Saturday is New Year's Eve. I will be here at 10 am, CST, I promise! Bob, will you be able to make it? I hope! I hope!

Even if I make it, it's New Years Eve and the chances of my being sober enough to see, let alone use, a keyboard at midnight are nil.

So on the whole, probably not.

Well, we all know that Bob won't be there tomorrow! I can do 10 CST...16:00, GMT...(just in case!), and will be here then tomorrow. Would love to chat with some of you on the WC chat.

If I am alone, so be it. It is New Year's Eve, after all! Happy New Year, everyone!

Well, heck. I think I really messed up the chats by trying to change everything. So sorry. I even left my class early so I'd be home in time, but no one is there now.

I am thinking we should go back to our original 12:00 am, Central time, on Saturday time and just live with it that Bob can't join us. He couldn't join us for years anyway on Wordcraft chats because of his server situation in England. I don't care if we do Google Chats or Wordcraft Chats. Should we stick to Wordcraft? Arnie, what are your thoughts on the chats? I really hate to give them up.

If they are back to the old times again I probably will be able to make most weeks. I confess that I've got out of the habit lately; I've either been away or out. This time, though, I totally forgot about it.

I am there now, but no one else is. I was late because of my class so maybe people left. Plus, I am out of the habit of switching from time zones so I mistakenly said it would be 16:00 GMT, but it's 18:00. Geez! I imagine that's why arnie isn't here. CW was going to come, but she must have gotten busy, as must have z. Oh well...

I could kick myself for trying to change these times.

While I really hate to offer any tiny change to the chats, I am wondering if we could try Gmail this Saturday. Geoff can't access the Wordcraft chats, but he could chat with us on Gmail. I will man both sites, just in case someone comes here instead. Deal???

I know you were joking, but it should be mentioned that "man" here is quite correct; indeed, it's the only sensible way of writing it.

"Man" is from man, mann, "human being, person". There is no distinction between the sexes. It was only used in the "male person" sense relatively late in the development of Old English, from around 1000. Before that, wer and wif were used if you wanted to tell the sexes apart. From the former we get "werewolf"* and from the latter "wife", of course.

* To digress, since a werewolf is presumably male, does that mean there are no females, or are they properly wifewolves? Confused

My daughter was instrumental in changing their high school's logo from using "mankind" to using "humankind." Frankly, I like "mankind" better, but I was proud of her for taking a stand. This was a huge high school with lots and lots of history and politics. Getting something like this changed was Herculean! (There I go again! Wink)

Well, perhaps you have to be female to understand, but we always seem to be left out. I am not obsessed with this kind of thing, like others are, but I can understand. I don't think men do. It's similar to our current issue about Catholic health insurance not paying employees for birth control...but they all pay for Viagra. Men run the church; men run politics; men run the insurance companies; and so on.

All we need to do is let my fellow peeeeeevologists and grammar grouches
have our way and revert to the English of Beowuf, when we had gender for nouns. That should solve the problem. Uhhh, wellll, not really. Even back then "woman" was masculine! http://homes.chass.utoronto.ca...1ArchibaldBarber.htm
