Many happy returns of your birthday, Di. Also, wishing you Travelling Mercies as you come to the States (although nowhere near where I live!).

Today's Birthday Boy's Michael Herman
Not a mermaid, you know, but a merman
So let's celebrate
It's still not too late,
As nearly as we can determine.

Happy Birthday, Michael. Let's see some more posts from you!

It also was the birthday of my grandmother who is now dead. She had been born in Scotland and had planned her whole life to go back and visit. When she finally got around to it, in her eighties, she just was too old, and thus nervous, to travel. She taught me the importance of not putting off traveling until it's too late.

Happy Birthday, Meshal!

I can't write a limerick in English, let alone Arabic, so my good wishes will have to suffice, I'm afraid. Smile

Come on you raver, you seer of visions,

October 31 --- Sir Joseph Swan

Today's birthday boy was enlightened.
Of Halloween never was frightened.
He lit up the night
With the Ediswan Light,
For which he was duly beknightened.

This is most interesting. I never knew that the glass insulated screw base, used universally in the USA and known as the Edison Screw, was actually invented by Joseph Swan's younger brother, Alfred!

The bayonet base, used in most of the rest of the world, was also invented by Alfred.

Happy Birthday, Sir Joe, though you're, well,
Not corporeal, but we're so swell
Now, we'll find us a way
Now to greet you and say--
Many happy returns, what the hell?

Happy Birthday, Sir Joseph Swan--you're unreal!

My dear friends, I thank you kindly. Your group here is immensely talented.

You are correct, Mr. English, about Alfred's invention. My brother, an architect, followed in my footsteps as an inventer. Alfred worked for more than a year perfecting the insulating material in which the terminals at the base of the incandescent electric lamp are held. Eventually his device was improved by developing a cap with a brass collar and insulating the caps with his insulating material, which he named Vitrite. Alfred was savvy in that he patented an automatic process where the Vitrate cap was cheaply and quickly produced. I believe (though Mr. English might correct me on this) that these caps are still being used in your day.

We hope you had fun;
Enjoyed it a ton!
And we hope you were treated like Zeus!

Once again I am late. So sorry!

Happy birthday, Kay and Muse. Muse, how about posting with us again? We so enjoyed you. KHC, we'd love to see more of you in the higher forums!

Tuesday's birthday star is in Shoreline
Where we see him munch cake and pour wine
His tin joints don't rust
For he treats them, we trust,
With double U D thirty-nine.

I celebrated with an excellent dinner in a Spanish restaurant yesterday evening with two members of the family, and a very fine Chinese meal last Saturday with seven of 'em. Big Grin

It really does seem that you English people only eat from other cultures. I hope you at least had a good, old-fashioned English breakfast!

Well ... I admit that English cuisine is not exactly noted for its excellence. There are plenty of exceptions, though.

One of the benefits of a multi-cultural society is that it is fairly easy to find interesting food from other places in the world.

London has restaurants serving food from almost every other country in the world, and the other large cities have several. Most small towns can boast a Chinese and/or Indian restaurant, at least.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DALE!

On your birthday we should have said "HAIL!"
Had we known it, we would have, Sir Dale.
We hope on that day,
You spellchecked okay. Wink
Next year we'll be good...without fail!

Dec. 17: Chris J Strolin

Mr Strolin, whose first name is Chris,
Says he thinks something's clearly amiss.
He's still here and alive
At age 55,
But his childhood was never like this.

Happy Birthday to Strolin who's rollin'
in lim'ricks; his brain is so swollen
With puns, rhymes and meter
(Makes life even sweeter!).
Let's extoll his cajolin', patrollin'!

Happy Birthday, CJ!

Happy Birthday to Strolin, yes Chris;
I'm tardy, but don't mean to diss--
Let's hope 'twas a blast;
Didn't fly by too fast
And the wisdom of age brings you bliss!

Happy Birthday, Zmježd!

Happy birthday to talented Z;
His knowledge of words, you'll agree,
Is really immense,
(Makes me feel a bit dense!);
We hope that he partied with glee!

unwanted gifts back for a refund

My hearty thanks to the belatedly gracious three. One of the bennies for reaching my age is that the number of gifts is quite small and rather select. I have no intention of returning Bishop & Coulston's Roman Military Equipment: From the Punic Wars to the Fall of Rome.
