Interesting. You could also point out that with the board's recent facelift we apparently lost the ability to see the total numbers of posts for various members. No more celebrations for so-and-so's 2,000th post or whatnot.
Here's another stat to chew on if that's your idea of a good time: In almost every thread on the board, the ration of posts to views is roughly one to ten. In other words, take the number of replies listed, multiply it by ten, and you'll likely be in the ballpark as far as the total number of views is concerned. This seems to hold true for both smaller threads ("The conversation is waiting" - 4/46) and the larger ones (the most recent DD tread - 386/3799) and seems to indicate that Wordcrafters, on average, are 10 times more likely not to have anything to say on a topic than they are. There are, naturally, exceptions. The "Six letters" thread has a 426/1839 ratio, or about 1/4.5 as appossed to 1/10 but I think this reflects the fact that a number of us (myself included) almost never visit this thread while those of us who prefer it tend to visit it for the specific purpose of adding to it. Not sure, of course. Just a theory. A thread with a lopsided ratio is not necessarily a failure. (None of them are, really, but you know what I mean.) "Interesting Etymologies" clocks in at 1/24, meaning plenty of people seem to find it interesting but no one has much to add to the discussion. I'm pleased to see my OEDILF thread sporting a 38/197 ratio. Maybe this indicates that the whole idea is not all that absurd (Thanks, B.H.) as it might at first glance appear. |

I forgot that we used to be able to see posts of people. Now that you remind me, I miss it too. I will see if we can get that back.
CJ, I think it is funny the way you always analyze this board. CJ brings up another good point when he says that no thread is a failure. Sometimes I get very frustrated that people don't start new threads. I wonder if it is because they are afraid that no one will reply, and then they will consider it a failure. CJ is right. All our threads are interesting, and there is not such thing as a failed thread! So, get going and start those threads! |

You mean you haven't seen the number of posts all along? They are shown at the foot of each post.
... Actually, I just enabled them. For some reason it is a forum-specific thing, and it meant editing the display properties for each forum in turn, rather than just one site-wide property. Why a board owner would want to display the number of posts in one forum but not in others is beyond me. My browser will not even allow me to start a new thread...
and I think others are like me. So that has to be worked into the equation. Whatever the equation is... |

I believe the only other person who is still having problems is Asa. I know he is working on getting it fixed.
I am sorry, KHC. I wish I could help! |

KHC, Asa did reload his browser, and now he can fully post. Have you given that any more thought? It must be very frustrating this way!

Oh, Tinman, I love those signs! Where are they mostly? In the West? We don't have them around here.

Aren't they great, Kalleh! They're very clever and witty. I still laugh when I read some of them.
I thought they were throughout the US. I remember them seeing them as a kid in the desert around Little America, Wyoming, as we were driving from Kansas to Washington. I was 7 at the time. Click on "Burma" in my last post, and you will see the locations of many of the signs. This site says there were eventually 7,000 verses posted in 44 states and that during World War II GIs erected similar signs in Alaska (not a state then), Germany and Antartica. Allan Odell came up with the idea to advertise his family's original brushless shaving cream in 1925. His father wasn't convinced, but finally gave him $200 to try out his idea. His first signs were put up in 1925 in a farmer's field along Highway 65 between Albert Lea and Minneapolis, Minnesota and some in fields along the road between Red Wing and Minneapolis. They really took off in the 1930s during the Depression because they offered humor and optimism during a very trying time. One set of signs offered to send someone to Mars for 900 empty jars. Someone sent in 900 jars, and the company sent them to Mars! They died out in 1963 when Phillip Morris bought the Burma-Shave Company and decided the signs were silly (stupid tobacco company!), but I remember (or misremember) seeing a Burma-Shave sign somewhere around Boise, Idaho in 1967. The last Burma-Shave sign was prophetic. It read: SHAVING BRUSHES YOU'LL SOON SEE 'EM ON THE SHELF IN SOME MUSEUM BURMA-SHAVE Faster cars, superhighways, and billboards contributed to the death of the little signs. Some sites use a hyphen in Burma-Shave and some don't. I don't know which is correct, but I suspect the hyphen was originally used and was dropped later. You're probably too young to remember them, Kalleh. They were discontinued in the 1960s. A group I'm with has recently revived the idea for protest political signs. My earlier post to KHC was my way of suggesting we could come up with clever Burma-Shave type verses. Also it might relieve some of the frustration KHC must feel at being able to post just one line at a time. Tinman This message has been edited. Last edited by: tinman, |
