Interesting. You could also point out that with the board's recent facelift we apparently lost the ability to see the total numbers of posts for various members. No more celebrations for so-and-so's 2,000th post or whatnot.
Here's another stat to chew on if that's your idea of a good time: In almost every thread on the board, the ration of posts to views is roughly one to ten. In other words, take the number of replies listed, multiply it by ten, and you'll likely be in the ballpark as far as the total number of views is concerned. This seems to hold true for both smaller threads ("The conversation is waiting" - 4/46) and the larger ones (the most recent DD tread - 386/3799) and seems to indicate that Wordcrafters, on average, are 10 times more likely not to have anything to say on a topic than they are. There are, naturally, exceptions. The "Six letters" thread has a 426/1839 ratio, or about 1/4.5 as appossed to 1/10 but I think this reflects the fact that a number of us (myself included) almost never visit this thread while those of us who prefer it tend to visit it for the specific purpose of adding to it. Not sure, of course. Just a theory. A thread with a lopsided ratio is not necessarily a failure. (None of them are, really, but you know what I mean.) "Interesting Etymologies" clocks in at 1/24, meaning plenty of people seem to find it interesting but no one has much to add to the discussion. I'm pleased to see my OEDILF thread sporting a 38/197 ratio. Maybe this indicates that the whole idea is not all that absurd (Thanks, B.H.) as it might at first glance appear. |

I forgot that we used to be able to see posts of people. Now that you remind me, I miss it too. I will see if we can get that back.
CJ, I think it is funny the way you always analyze this board. CJ brings up another good point when he says that no thread is a failure. Sometimes I get very frustrated that people don't start new threads. I wonder if it is because they are afraid that no one will reply, and then they will consider it a failure. CJ is right. All our threads are interesting, and there is not such thing as a failed thread! So, get going and start those threads! |

You mean you haven't seen the number of posts all along? They are shown at the foot of each post.
... Actually, I just enabled them. For some reason it is a forum-specific thing, and it meant editing the display properties for each forum in turn, rather than just one site-wide property. Why a board owner would want to display the number of posts in one forum but not in others is beyond me. Oh, Tinman, I love those signs! Where are they mostly? In the West? We don't have them around here.

Aren't they great, Kalleh! They're very clever and witty. I still laugh when I read some of them.
I thought they were throughout the US. I remember them seeing them as a kid in the desert around Little America, Wyoming, as we were driving from Kansas to Washington. I was 7 at the time. Click on "Burma" in my last post, and you will see the locations of many of the signs. This site says there were eventually 7,000 verses posted in 44 states and that during World War II GIs erected similar signs in Alaska (not a state then), Germany and Antartica. Allan Odell came up with the idea to advertise his family's original brushless shaving cream in 1925. His father wasn't convinced, but finally gave him $200 to try out his idea. His first signs were put up in 1925 in a farmer's field along Highway 65 between Albert Lea and Minneapolis, Minnesota and some in fields along the road between Red Wing and Minneapolis. They really took off in the 1930s during the Depression because they offered humor and optimism during a very trying time. One set of signs offered to send someone to Mars for 900 empty jars. Someone sent in 900 jars, and the company sent them to Mars! They died out in 1963 when Phillip Morris bought the Burma-Shave Company and decided the signs were silly (stupid tobacco company!), but I remember (or misremember) seeing a Burma-Shave sign somewhere around Boise, Idaho in 1967. The last Burma-Shave sign was prophetic. It read: SHAVING BRUSHES YOU'LL SOON SEE 'EM ON THE SHELF IN SOME MUSEUM BURMA-SHAVE Faster cars, superhighways, and billboards contributed to the death of the little signs. Some sites use a hyphen in Burma-Shave and some don't. I don't know which is correct, but I suspect the hyphen was originally used and was dropped later. You're probably too young to remember them, Kalleh. They were discontinued in the 1960s. A group I'm with has recently revived the idea for protest political signs. My earlier post to KHC was my way of suggesting we could come up with clever Burma-Shave type verses. Also it might relieve some of the frustration KHC must feel at being able to post just one line at a time. Tinman This message has been edited. Last edited by: tinman, |

I believe the test of that is to make money off your violation. If somebody still owns the copyright, their lawyers will get in touch with you. |

How did I miss it when this was posted!?!?
I am so happy to be the top! HA! Now I can relax, knowing that it CAN be done is enough. LOL - actually, I'm surprised I started more topics than you, Kalleh. I didn't figure out how to do it for a while, and I thought you'd done it more than me. Maybe it's just that, being deprived of the site until just a short time ago, I had to "catch up." Probably, that is true for the postings as well. Now that I'm pretty much caught up, I'll slow down. ******* "Show your true colors. Mine is Yellow." ~Big Bird |

Yes, that's a problem for all of us, CW.
I'm surprised I started more topics than you, Kalleh. One of the flaws in these reports, I think (arnie might know this for sure), is that it includes private topics as posts. So, if you have started a lot of private topics to people or posted in private topics a lot, that could skew the results. |

quote:'Fraid I don't. I simply get a monthly report and basically copy/paste it into a post. You may well be right about private topics being included, though. Out of curiosity I carried out a search on all posts by CW. It found 662 matches, back to her first post at the end of September. However, the post count at the moment shows 772. There's definitely something adrift somewhere... Come on you raver, you seer of visions, Come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine! |

Oh, it sounds to me like the stats do include PMs. I've been sneaking around trying to get to know you all! HA! I would also think that when you do a search for posts by someone, Arnie, that it wouldn't show you the PMS, as they are P.
Fun! Kalleh - I do fully expect you to be back at the top of the heap now, though. I have some of those "real life activities" that CJ referred to. But you never know . . . ******* "Show your true colors. Mine is Yellow." ~Big Bird |

I hate to be such a hog with the starting of topics. I suppose a few of those are private ones, but, still. Yet we do need new topics or the place gets boring. I'm sure that great language questions/ideas come up with most of you on a daily basis. Any ideas why some of you don't like to start topics?

In addition, Infopop have announced that they are beta testing the new version 1.2 of the forum software, and they are aiming to release it later this month. It contains mostly minor changes, but one in particular is worth mentioning, as I know several people here have asked for it. Look for the "New PM!" tab along the top of the forum pages. It shows that you have a new Private Message from someone in the community. It should look like this although I imagine that, since we use a blue colour scheme, it will have a blue background: Come on you raver, you seer of visions, Come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine! |

Thanks, arnie. Yes, I am excited about the new PM alert, too. There are a few more changes that won't mean too much to the board, but that may get us noticed more. There is something that will make it easier for search engines to spider community content. Currently, other boards with much more fluff are getting picked up on certain words ("epicaricacy" comes to mind). Maybe we'll finally get our due!
Also, this beta testing on the new version of our board may have been why the chat was so slow last Saturday, according to Laurie from Infopop. |

Thanks! |

Well, thank goodness! I was getting a little tired of that red X. I am truly not trying to beat you, CW. In fact, I would love to see some others beating me on a regular basis. Speaking of which, Shu and I will not be on the board, nor the chat, this weekend because of a previous engagement...with CW! We will will have a complete report next Monday on precisely what this marvelous new poster, Caterwauller, is like! |

I went to my favorite carry-out, a beer shop known around town as "the best" place to get good beers, and they were all out of Fuller's! I did procure a lovely assortment, though, of other beers that the nice guy recommended. I played "the dumb lady", which in this case wasn't a stretch, and let him lead me around the store, picking out bottles along the way. This store is fun because you don't need to purchase an entire 6-pack, but can buy individual bottles, thus creating a unique 6-pack assortment.
Tonight, though, if they make it through the weather, we're going to the best local brewery in town, where the food is good and they keep at least 2 cask beers on tap all the time. When I spoke to the woman at the place yesterday, she said they also have at least one firkin of small-batch beer on Fridays. I know it's not quite up to your selection, RE, but I think we'll manage to enjoy it, nonetheless! ******* "Show your true colors. Mine is Yellow." ~Big Bird |
