When the night falls down I wait for you And you come around And the world's alive With the sound of kids On the street outside
When you walk into the room You pull me close and we start to move And we're spinning with the stars above And you lift me up in a wave of love...
Ooh, baby, do you know what that's worth ? Ooh heaven is a place on earth They say in heaven love comes first We'll make heaven a place on earth Ooh heaven is a place on earth
When I feel alone I reach for you And you bring me home When I'm lost at sea I hear your voice And it carries me
In this world we're just beginning To understand the miracle of living Baby I was afraid before But I'm not afraid anymore

heaven on earth...the closest thing to heaven
Looking out the window of this Hollywood hotel, You’d never know that it was Christmas Eve. The billboards and the neon took the place of silver bells, And the temperature is 84 degrees. I can hear the traffic on the crowded strip below As the palm trees poke their heads above the scene There’s not a single reindeer and it hardly ever snows, And Santa drives a Rolls Royce limousine.
But all along the Rockies you can feel it in the air From Telluride to Boulder down below The closest thing to heaven on this planet anywhere Is a quiet Christmas morning in the Colorado snow
I remember Christmases when I was just a boy In the morning I would run to see the tree And the carolers on the hillside sang their songs of Christmas joy Well, I always thought they sang them just for me.
Now the sun is setting in the California sky And I can’t find the spirit anywhere So I think it’s time for me to tell Los Angeles goodbye I’m going back home to look for Christmas there
But all along the Rockies you can feel it in the air From Telluride to Boulder down below The closest thing to heaven on this planet anywhere Is a quiet Christmas morning in the Colorado snow

the closest thing to heaven...the sun is setting
Twilight ~ Neil Young
The sun is setting on the long road home And I've been gone too long My little girl's waitin' by the front door I count the minutes till I hold you once more. Making love to you while time stands still I may be dreamin', but I always will 'Cause I'll be holding you When the twilight falls. Don't be lonely, don't be sad 'Cause you're the best thing that I ever had And true love is so hard to find And we were lookin' for such a long time. Making love to you while time stands still I may be dreamin', but I always will 'Cause I'll be holding you When the twilight falls. Don't be sad, you're the best thing that I ever had. The sun is settin' on the long road home.
I can hear the wind a blowing in my mind Just the way it used to sound through the Georgia pines You were there to answer when I called You and me Lord knows we had it all
Remember how I used to touch your hair While reaching for the feeling that was always there You were the best thing in my life that I recall You and me we had it all
I know that we can never live those times again So I let my dreams take me back to where we've been Then I'll stay with you girl as long as I can Oh it was so good oh so good hmm when I was your man
Never stop believing in your smile Even though you didn't stay it was all worth while You were the best thing in my life that I recall You and me we had it all mhm

run Rudolph run . . . Run Rabbit Run
On the farm, every Friday On the farm, its rabbit pie day. So, every Friday that ever comes along, I get up early and sing this little song:
Run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run! Run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Goes the farmer's gun. Run, rabbit, run, rabbit, run.
Run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run! Don't give the farmer his fun! Fun! Fun! He'll get by Without his rabbit pie So run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run!
Run, run rabbit run Dig that hole, forget the sun, And when at last the work is done Don't sit down it's time to start another one
For long you live and high you fly But only if you ride the tide And balanced on the biggest wave You race toward an early grave.

Andrew jackson fought the british down in new orleans And he sent them runnin' through the turnip greens When they wondered how he did it he said, were just mean And i get up early in the morning
In 1814 we took a little trip Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip We took a little bacon and we took a little beans And we caught the bloody British in the town of New Orleans
We fired our guns and the British kept a'comin' There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago We fired once more and they began to runnin' On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico
We looked down the river and we seed the British come And there must have been a hundred of 'em beatin' on the drum They stepped so high and they made their bugles ring We stood behind our cotton bales and didn't say a thing
We fired our guns and the British kept a'comin' There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago We fired once more and they began to runnin' On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico
Old Hickory said we could take 'em by surprise If we didn't fire our muskets till we looked 'em in the eyes We held our fire till we seed their faces well Then we opened up our squirrel guns and gave 'em ..Well....we...
…fired our guns and the British kept a'comin' There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago We fired once more and they began to runnin' On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico
Yeah they ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico
We fired our cannon till the barrel melted down So we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round We filled his head with cannonballs 'n' powdered his behind And when we touched the powder off, the gator lost his mind
We fired our guns and the British kept a'comin' There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago We fired once more and they began to runnin' On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico
Yeah they ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

There's a story behind the song Run Rabbit, Run. The song dates from the very early days of WW2. A couple of German bombs had fallen wide of their mark and killed nothing but a couple of rabbits and the song was written as a comment on the ineptness of the German Luftwaffe crews who, unfortunately, became a lot more expert shortly after . <ding> Kalleh did that song a while ago, so that gives me an excuse to do what I want: link to tinman's instead.
PS to Brits: "Old Hickory" in timman's song refers to Andrew Jackson (later president), during the War of 1812. That particular battle was fought after the war had been ended, but before news of the settlement reached the troups in New Orleans.
Old Hickory ... hickory stick
School days, school days, Dear old golden rule days. 'Readin' and 'ritin' and 'rithmetic, Taught to the tune of a hick'ry stick. You were my queen in calico, I was your bashful barefoot beau, And you wrote on my slate, 'I love you, Joe,' When we were a couple of kids.
'Member the hill, Nellie Darling, And the oak tree that grew on its brow? They've built forty stories Upon that old hill, And the oak's an old chestnut now. 'Member the meadows so green, dear, So fragrant with clover and maize, Into new city lots And apartment block plots, They've torn them up since those days.
Someday we'll build a home on a hilltop high You and I, shiny and new Cottage that two can fill And we'll be pleased to be called The folks who live on the hill
Someday we may be adding a wing or two A thing or two We will make changes, as any family will But we will always be called The folks who live on the hill
Our verandah will command a view of meadows green The sort of view that seems to want to be seen And when our kids grow up and leave us We sit and look at that same old view Just we two, Darby and Joan Who used to be Jack and Jill The folks who like to be called What they have always been called The folks who live on the hill

When our kids grow up ... I won't grow up
I won't grow up, (I won't grow up) I don't want to go to school. (I don't want to go to school) Just to learn to be a parrot, (Just to learn to be a parrot) And recite a silly rule. (And recite a silly rule) If growing up means It would be beneath my dignity to climb a tree, I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up Not me! Not I, Not me! Not me!
I won't grow up, / I don't want to wear a tie. And a serious expression / In the middle of July. And if it means I must prepare / To shoulder burdens with a worried air, I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up Not me, Not I, Not me! So there!
Never gonna be a man, / I won't! Like to see somebody try / And make me. Anyone who wants to try And make me turn into a man, / Catch me if you can.
I won't grow up. / Not a penny will I pinch. I will never grow a mustache, / Or a fraction of an inch. 'Cause growing up is awfuller Than all the awful things that ever were. I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up, No sir, Not I, Not me, So there!

Catch me if you can by Eric Clapton and Gary Brooker
Catch me if you can; I won't be easy to find. I got a woman at home that's driving me out of my mind. Catch me if you can; it won't be easy to do. And I'm warning you brother I won't be leaving no clues.
Catch me if you can; I won't be leaving no scent. I've been running the wrong way, I think it's time that I went. Believe me, I'm a man; I ain't easy to tend. And I'm moving on out, so catch me if you can.

Girl, come running Girl, come running Girl, come running
When you get tired of running around (running around all over town) All of your friends putting you down (putting you down all over town) Don't do your crying alone Well, baby: Girl, come running home.
Someday you'll be feeling so lonely (lower than low, nowhere to go) Why don't you call me, girl, that's when I'll show (I love you so, I love you so) Don't do your crying alone Well, baby: Girl, come running home.
Was it so bad, girl? Just think of what we had. I need you so (come on, baby) Woh (come on, baby) Don't ever go (come on, baby) Woh (come on baby)
You're gonna get now feeling so blue, (bluer than blue, baby, it's true) And don't you forget that I'm feeling it too. (bluer than you, baby, it's true) Well, don't do your crying alone (all alone) Well, baby: Girl, come running, GIrl, come running, Girl, come running home.

I do love the last two choruses of this song. Well worth the listen, even though this isn't a wonderful midi version. (Edit:This midi has fine music, and voices, but it omits the linked lyric.)
the nights will sure be colder … Grown a little colder
Haul out the holly Put up the tree before my spirit falls again Fill up the stocking I may be rushing things, but deck the halls again …. now
For we need a little Christmas / Right this very minute Candles in the window / Carols at the spinet Yes, we need a little Christmas / Right this very minute It hasn't snowed a single flurry / But Santa, dear, we're in a hurry So climb down the chimney Turn on the brightest string of light I've ever seen Slice up the fruitcake It's time we hung some tinsel on that evergreen … bough
For I've grown a little leaner / Grown a little colder Grown a little sadder / Grown a little older And I need a little angel / Sitting on my shoulder Need a little Christmas now.
For we need a little music / Need a little laughter Need a little singing / Ringing through the rafter And we need a little snappy / "Happy ever after" Need a little Christmas now.

Santa's on his way ... They know that Santa's on his way
Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose, Yuletide carols being sung by a choir, And folks dressed up like Eskimos.
Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe, Help to make the season bright, Tiny tots with their eyes all a-glow, Will find it hard to sleep tonight.
They know that Santa's on his way He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh, And ev'ry mother's child is gonna spy, To see if reindeer really know how to fly.
And so I'm offering this simple phrase, To kids from one to ninety-two, Although it's been said Many times, Many ways Merry Christmas to you.
Come out, come out! October is here; Come out, come out! The weather is clear. Jack Frost has brought something For you and for me; His frosty white paintings -- A wonder to see!
Come look, come look! We've only begun; Come look, come look! For Jack is not done. Yes, there are more presents From jolly Jack Frost; They're hidden in leaves That the north wind has tossed.
Ripe nuts, ripe nuts! For me and for you; Ripe nuts, ripe nuts! Let's gather a few. Jack Frost seems to know That we love things to eat; And hot roasted chestnuts Are such a good treat!

How he sings, Raggy music to his cattle As he swings Back and forward in his saddle On his horse (A pretty good horse), Who is syncopated gaited, And with such a funny meter To the roar of his repeater. They say roses are red and violets are purple Sugar is sweet and so's maple surple Well, I'm the seventh out of seven sons My pappy was a pistol I'm a son of a gun.
Dang me, dang me They oughta take a rope and hang me High from the highest tree Woman, would you weep for me?

son-of-a-gun . . . deep blue sea
I don't want you But I hate to lose you You've got me in between The devil and the deep blue sea
I forgive you 'Cause I can't forget you You've got me in between The devil and the deep blue sea
I ought to cross you off my list But when you come a-knocking at my door Fate seems to give my heart a twist And I come running back for more
I should hate you But I guess I love you You've got me in between The devil and the deep blue sea

running back for more ... running down the road
Well, I'm running down the road tryin' to loosen my load I've got seven women on my mind, Four that wanna own me, Two that wanna stone me, One says she's a friend of mine. Take it easy, take it easy Don't let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy.
Well, I'm a standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona And such a fine sight to see It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford Slowin' down to take a look at me Come on, baby, don't say maybe I gotta know if your sweet love is gonna save me.

Tra la ... Tra la la la la
Nanki-Poo sing: The flowers that bloom in the spring, Tra la, Breathe promise of merry sunshine — As we merrily dance and we sing, Tra la, We welcome the hope that they bring, Tra la, Of a summer of roses and wine, Of a summer of roses and wine. And that's what we mean when we say that a thing Is welcome as flowers that bloom in the spring. Tra la la la la, Tra la la la la, The flowers that bloom in the spring.
Koko sings: The flowers that bloom in the spring, Tra la, Have nothing to do with the case. I've got to take under my wing, Tra la, A most unattractive old thing, Tra la, With a caricature of a face, With a caricature of a face. And that's what I mean when I say, or I sing, "Oh, bother the flowers that bloom in the spring." Tra la la la la, Tra la la la la, "Oh, bother the flowers of spring."

April Showers ~ Al Jolson
Life is not a highway strewn with flowers, Still it holds a goodly share of bliss, When the sun gives way to April showers, Here is the point you should never miss.
Though April showers may come your way, They bring the flowers that bloom in May. So if it's raining, have no regrets, Because it isn't raining rain, you know, (It's raining violets,) And where you see clouds upon the hills, You soon will see crowds of daffodils, So keep on looking for a blue bird, And list'ning for his song, Whenever April showers come along.
And where you see clouds upon the hills, You soon will see crowds of daffodils, So keep on looking for a blue bird, And list'ning for his song, Whenever April showers come along.

Life is not a highway...Life is a highway
Life's like a road that you travel on When there's one day here and the next day gone Sometimes you bend and sometimes you stand Sometimes you turn your head to the wind There's a world outside ev'ry darkened door Where blues won't haunt you anymore Where brave are free and lovers soar Come ride with me to the distant shore We won't hesitate Break down the garden's gate There's not much time left today
Life is a highway I wanna ride it all night long If you're going my way I wanna drive it all night long
Through all these cities and all these towns It's in my blood and it's all around I love you now like I loved you then This is the road and these are the hands From Mozambique to those Memphis nights The Khyber Pass to Vancouver's lights
Knock me down, get back up again You're in my blood I'm not a lonely man There's no load I can't hold Road so rough, this I know I'll be there when the light comes in Just tell 'em we're survivors
Gimme gimme gimme gimme yeah If you're going my way I wanna drive it all night long There was a distance between you and I A misunderstanding once But now we look in the eye
There ain't no load that I can't hold Road so rough, this I know I'll be there when the light comes in Just tell 'em we're survivors
Life is a highway I wanna ride it all night long If you're going my way I wanna drive it all night long

I Just Called to Say I Love You ~ Stevie Wonder
No new years’s day To celebrate No chocolate covered candy hearts to give away No first of spring No song to sing In fact here’s just another ordinary day No april rain No flowers bloom No wedding saturday within the month of june But what it is Is something true Made up of these three words that I must say to you
I just called to say I love you I just called to say how much I care I just called to say I love you And I mean it from the bottom of my heart

within the month of june … One Sunday morning in the month of June
As I was sitting with a jug and spoon, One Sunday morning in the month of June. A birdie sang in an ivy bunch And the song he sang was the jug of punch. Chorus: Tura lura lu, tura lura lu, tura lura lu, tura lura lu. A birdie sang in an ivy bunch and the song he sang was the jug of punch.
What more diversion can a man desire / Than to court a girl by a cheerful fire? A carey pippin to crack and crunch / And on the table a jug of punch. (Chorus)
Ye mortal lords, drink your nectar wine / And ye quality folk, sip your claret fine. I'd give them all the grapes in the bunch / For a jolly pull at my jug of punch. (Chorus)
Ye learned doctors, with all your art, / Cannot cure a depression on the heart. But even a cripple forgets his hunch / When he's snug outside of a jug of punch. (Chorus)
And when I'm dead and I'm in my grave, / No costly tombstone do I ever crave. Just lay me down in my native peat / With a jug of punch at my head and feet. (Chorus)

And now, wherever....
Just lay me down in my native peat...lay me down in tall grass
I know there’s nothing to say Someone has taken my place When times go bad When times go rough Won’t you lay me down in tall grass And let me do my stuff
I know I got nothin’ on you I know there’s nothing to do When times go bad And you can’t get enough Won’t you lay me down in the tall grass And let me do my stuff
One thing I think you should know I ain’t gonna miss you when you go Been down so long I’ve been tossed around enough Couldn’t you just Let me go down and do my stuff
I know you’re hopin’ to find Someone who’s gonna give you piece of mind When times go bad When times go rough Won’t you lay me down in tall grass And let me do my stuff

Second Hand News ... Second Hand Rose
Father has a business strictly second hand Everything from toothpicks to a baby-grand Stuff in our apartment came from father’s store Even things I’m wearing someone wore before It’s no wonder that I feel abused I never get a thing that ain’t been used
I’m wearing second hand hats Second hand clothes That’s why they call me Second hand Rose
Even our piano in the parlor Father bought for ten cents on the dollar Second hand pearls I’m sick of second hand curls I never get a single thing that’s new Even Jake, the plumber, he’s a man I adore Had the nerve to tell me he’s been married before!
Everyone knows that I’m just Second hand Rose From Second Avenue! From Second Avenue! Nu!
One more time! Everyone knows that I’m just Second hand Rose (from Second Avenue!) From what? Let’s see if you know the fills! Once while strolling Through the Ritz a girl got my goat... (she nudged her friend And said oh look there goes My old fur coat) You don’t need me!
Everyone knows that I’m just Second hand Rose From Second Avenue! (Ya can’t beat the egg-creams!) Good! Second Avenue! (There is more between me And Fifth Avenue, I tell ya) Right! Second Avenue!
Sung by Barbra Streisand, of course!

Second Hand Rose...Fifth Avenue
Easter Bonnet - Irving Berlin
In your easter bonnet, with all the frills upon it, You?ll be the grandest lady in the easter parade. I?ll be all in clover and when they look you over, I?ll be the proudest fellow in the easter parade. On the avenue, fifth avenue, the photographers will snap us, And you'll find that you're in the rotogravure. Oh, I could write a sonnet about your easter bonnet, And of the girl I'm taking to the easter parade.
I take it I play this game differently than the rest of you. I post the last phrase that you posted (from the previous song presumably), and then I post a song that has a phrase from the song you posted (e.g. "Fifth Avenue"). Oh...well...I've always been good at parallel play!
I hadn't known "rotogravure" is in that song, and I hadn't heard it before.

Nah, I think you do it the normal way, and I'm the oddball. I use, as my header, the bit I'm linking to and the bit I link to it -- so that you can see the overlap. For instance, you used easter parade and I'm using 'parade' with a different adjective. Thus:
easter parade ... honky-tonk parade
Say, it's only a paper moon Sailing over a cardboard sea. But it wouldn't be make-believe If you believed in me.
Yes, it's only a canvas sky Hanging over a muslin tree. But it wouldn't be make-believe If you believed in me.
Without your love It's a honky-tonk parade Without your love It's a melody played in a penny arcade
It's a Barnum and Bailey world Just as phony as it can be. But it wouldn't be make-believe If you believed in me.
Hic, always loved that song...and this one, as well.
But it wouldn't be make-believe...I can make believe
And now I'm all alone again Nowhere to turn, no one to go to Without a home without a friend Without a face to say hello to And now the night is near I can make believe he's here
Sometimes I walk alone at night When everybody else is sleeping I think of him and then I'm happy With the company I'm keeping The city goes to bed And I can live inside my head
On my own Pretending he's beside me All alone I walk with him till morning Without him I feel his arms around me And when I lose my way I close my eyes And he has found me
In the rain the pavement shines like silver All the lights are misty in the river In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight And all I see is him and me forever and forever
And I know it's only in my mind That I'm talking to myself and not to him And although I know that he is blind Still I say, there's a way for us
I love him But when the night is over He is gone The river's just a river Without him The world around me changes The trees are bare and everywhere The streets are full of strangers
I love him But every day I'm learning All my life I've only been pretending Without me His world would go on turning A world that's full of happiness That I have never known
I love him I love him I love him But only on my own

I can make believe...All alone
All Alone ~ Irving Berlin (sung by Frank Sinatra)
All alone, I'm so all alone There is no one else, but you All alone, by the telephone Waiting for a ring-a-ting-a-ling
I'm all alone, every evening All alone, feeling blue
Wondering (I wonder) where you are And how you are And if you are - all alone too
Words & Music by Grant Clarke & Harry Akst Recorded by Ethyl Waters in the 1929 Vitaphone short "On With The Show". Also recorded by Linda Ronstadt, 1986
Am I blue Am I blue Ain't these tears in my eyes telling you Am I blue You would be too If each plan with your man just fell through Was a time I was his only one Now I'm the sad and lonely one Ooh Was I gay Till today Now he's gone and we're through Am I blue Was a time I was the only one Now I'm the sad and lonely one Ooh Was I gay Till today Now he's gone and we're through Am I blue Am I blue Ooh hoo Am I blue

All alone, by the telephone...crazy little thing they call a telephone
Well, back in 1876 an ol' boy named Bell Invented a contraption that we know so well By the 1950s they're in everybody's home It's a crazy little thing they call a telephone Now, there's one in every corner In the back of every bar You can get one in your briefcase On a plane or in your car
So tell me why...haven't I...heard from you? Tell me why...haven't I...heard from you? I said now darlin', honey, what is your excuse? Why haven't I...heard from you?
Well, there's no problem gettin' to me Baby, you can dial direct I got call forward and call waitin' You can even call collect The serviceman he told me That my phone was workin' fine And I have come to the conclusion The trouble isn't with my line I'm sure the operator Will be glad to put you through So dial zero for assisstance If this all confuses you
So tell me why...haven't I...heard from you? Tell me why...haven't I...heard from you? I said now darlin', honey, what is your excuse? Why haven't I...heard from you?
There'd better be a flood A landslide of mud A fire that burns up the wires And thunder so loud with black funnel cloud A natural disaster I know nothin' about
So tell me why...haven't I...heard from you? Tell me why...haven't I...heard from you? I said now darlin', honey, what is your excuse? Why haven't I...heard from you you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you?
