what you done to me . . . what you done for me

Now that you're here with me
I want to keep you free
To do the things that you wanna do
The joy now is loving you
But now the day has come
To let you know where I am coming from
The best of my years to go to you
Is the only thing that I can do
But these things don't come over night
Loving you baby and I think I'm right
Let me say before I forget
That loving you baby is where it's at

Oh baby look what you done for me
Oh baby you set my heart free
Sometimes I wanna leave and then I'll say
It wouldn't make sense now anyway
But forgive me baby if I do wrong
I haven't been a true man for so long
Let me say before
I forget loving you baby is where it's at
Oh baby look what you done for me
Oh baby you set my heart free

Harry Truman...burning

A Church is Burning
~ Simon and Garfunkel

A church is burning
The flames rise higher
Like hands that are praying
Aglow in the sky
Like hands that are praying
The fire is saying,
"You can burn down my churches
But I shall be free."

Never Hit Your Grandma With A Shovel
(H.W.Hanemann)

Spike Jones & his City Slickers - 1942
(Vocal: The Boys in the Back Room)

Oooh! Never hit your Grandma with a shovel
It makes a bad impression on her mind
(On her mind)
In a better way impart
All the love things in your heart
For it's possible she may retort in kind
(Retort in kind)
Remember Granny's known you since a baby
And even though in fun, could prove a shock
(Prove a shock)
So respect her aged head,
Stay the shovel and instead
Paste your dear old, sweet old Grandma
With a rock.

A Grandma, with her grandchild,
Sat by the kitchen door
Of a quaint old fashioned house built long ago
The little lass grew restless
As on the evening wore
For she felt the time was fleeting very slow
"I must do something" cried the girl,
And seized the nearby spade
But a passing stranger blocked her swing
Whilst these wise words he said

Oh! Never hit your Grandma with a shovel
It makes a bad impression on her mind
In a better way impart
All the love things in your heart
For it's possible she may retort in kind
Remember Granny's known you since a baby
And even though in fun, could prove a shock
(Prove a shock)
So respect her aged head,
Stay the shovel and instead
Paste your dear old, sweet old Grandma
With a rock.
(A great big rock)

This site says the song was written by Felix Hanemann, but a search showed that Felix Hanemann was born in 1953, 11 years after Spike Jones recorded it. Another source revealed it was written by H.W. Hanemann in 1931.

Untoppable, tinman, but I hope this amuses. The site should have the music for you.

Never hit your Grandma with a shovel ... Grandma got run over by a reindeer (title)

Chorus: Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Walking home from our house Christmas eve.
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and grandpa we believe.

She'd been drinking too much eggnog,
And we begged her not to go.
But she forgot her medication,
And she staggered out the door into the snow.
When we found her Christmas morning,
At the scene of the attack,
She had hoof-prints on her forehead,
And incriminating Claus marks on her back. (chorus)

Now we're all so proud of grandpa,
He's been taking this so well.
See him in there watching football,
Drinking beer and playing cards with Cousin Mel.
It's not Christmas without Grandma,
All the family's dressed in black
And we just can't help but wonder:
Should we open up her gifts, or send them back? (chorus)

Now the goose is on the table
And the pudding made of fig
And the blue and silver candles
That would just have matched the hair on grandma's wig.
I've warned all my friends and neighbors:
Better watch out for yourselves,
They should never give a license
To a man who drives a sleigh and plays with elves. (chorus)

Hic, I think that song is so funny! Big Grin

Grandma got run over by a reindeer...Better watch out

Santa Claus is Coming to Town!

Oh! You better watch out
You better not cry
You better not pout I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town

He's making a list
Checking it twice
Gonna find out who's naughty or nice
Santa Claus is coming to town

[Verse 1:]
You and me together alone
Fireplace, watchin the snow
Holding me up in your arms, watcha wanna do?
I'm in the mood to put it down slow
Catchin you under te mistletoe

[Chorus:]
Tonight is just for you and me
You can cut my Xmas tree
Baby it's alright to be naughty on Xmas
I'll slide down your chimney
Misbehave it's cool with me
Baby it's alright to be naught on Xmas

[Verse 2:]
Melodie soothing the soul
Baby please don't say no
I know you got mine too
And you don't have to wrap it up (I'm cool)
You're all I want for Xmas Eve baby, that's the truth
No, we don't need no toys, you give me Xmas joy
We'll spend this holiday together like all lovers do

[Repeat Chorus]

[Bridge:]
I just want to lay and cuddle boy, I love you babe
Don't you feel like causing trouble on this Xmas day?
If I had to choose it wouldn't be no other way
I know it don't sound right but it's okay

Oooh - good song, Jerry! Thanks for joining our lyrics thread again!

let it snow . . . delightful

Mary Poppins:
[Spoken]
In ev'ry job that must be done
There is an element of fun
You find the fun and snap!
The job's a game

[Sung]
And ev'ry task you undertake
Becomes a piece of cake
A lark! A spree! It's very clear to see that

A Spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
The medicine go down-wown
The medicine go down
Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
In a most delightful way

A robin feathering his nest
Has very little time to rest
While gathering his bits of twine and twig
Though quite intent in his pursuit
He has a merry tune to toot
He knows a song will move the job along - for

A Spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
The medicine go down-wown
The medicine go down
Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
In a most delightful way

Spoonful of Sugar...delightful

The night is young and the skies are clear
And if you want to go walkin', dear
It's delightful, it's delicious,
it's de-lovely

I understand the reason why
You're sentimental -- well, so am I
It's delightful, it's delicious,
it's de-lovely

You can tell at a glance
What a swell night this is for romance
You can hear Mother Nature murmuring low,
"Let yourself go"

So please be sweet, my chickadee,
And when I kiss you, say to me
"It's delightful, it's delicious,
It's delectable, it's delirious,
It's dilemma, it's de limit,
It's deluxe, it's de-lovely"
It's delightful, it's delicious,
It's de-lovely

It's De-lovely

'nita, this is getting to be fun! Wanna dance?

my chickadee ... every chickadee
Tweedily deedily dee, Tweedily deedily dee,
Tweedily deedily dee, Tweedily deedily dee,
Tweedily deedily dee, Tweedily deedily dee,
Tweedily deedily dee, Tweedily deedily dee,
    Tweet, ... tweet, ... tweet-tweet

He rocks in the treetops all day long,
Hoppin' and a-boppin' and a-singin' his song.
All the little birds on J-Bird Street,
Love to hear the robin go tweet, tweet, tweet.

    [chorus]: Rockin' robin (tweet, tweet, tweet);
    Rock, rock, rockin' robin (tweet, tweedle-dee);
Go rockin' robin, we're really gonna rock tonight.

    Every little swallow, every chickadee,
Every little bird in the tall oak tree,
The wise old owl, the big black crow,
Flappin' their wings singin' go, bird, go. [chorus]

The pretty little raven at the bird bandstand
Taught him how to do the bop and it was grand,
They started goin' steady and bless my soul,
He out-bopped the buzzard and the oriole. [repeats of chorus and verses]

Go rockin' robin, 'cause we're really gonna rock tonight.
- Rockin Robin, by Jimmy Thomas, per Bobby Day's 1958 recording. (The names are pseudonyms for Leon Rene and Bobby Byrd respectively. Nice aptonym, the later.) It reached #2 on the charts, as did Michael Jackson's later version.

It's amazing how many mondegreened versions are on the web; I've tried to clean up the errors.

PORGY
Boss, dat bird mean trouble.
Once de buzzard fold his wing an' light over yo' house,
all yo' happiness done dead.
Buzzard keep on flyin' over, take along yo' shadow.
Ain' nobody dead dis mornin'
Livin's jus' begun.
Two is strong where one is feeble;
man an' woman livin', workin',
Sharin' grief an' sharin' laughter,
An' love like Augus' sun.
Trouble, is dat you over yonder
lookin' lean an' hungry?
Don' you let dat buzzard keep you
hangin' round my do'.
Ain' you heard de news this mornin'?
Step out, brudder, hit de gravel;
Porgy who you used to feed on,
Don' live here no mo'
Ha, ha, ha, ha! Buzzard, on yo' way!
Ole age, what is you anyhow,
nuttin' but bein' lonely.
Pack yo' things an' fly from here,
Carry grief an' pain.
Dere's two folks livin' in dis shelter
Eatin', sleepin', singin', prayin'.
Ain' no such thing as loneliness.
An' Porgy's young again.

PORGY AND CHORUS
Buzzard, keep on flyin',
Porgy's young again.

From Porgy and Bess, obviously

Hic: Okay, but you gotta lead.

buzzard...shadow

The shadow of your smile when you are gone
Will color all my dreams and light the dawn
Look into my eyes, my love, and see
All the lovely things you are to me

Our wistful little star was far too high
A teardrop kissed your lips and so did I
Now when I remember spring
And all the joy that love can bring
I will be remembering the shadow of your smile

Try To Remember

From the Musical "The Fantasticks"
Words & Music by Tom Jones & Harvey Schmidt, 1960
Recorded by The Brothers Four in 1961, Ed Ames in 1965 (#73)

Try to remember the kind of September
When life was slow and oh so mellow.
Try to remember the kind of September
When grass was green and grain was yellow
Try to remember the kind of September
When you were a tender and callow fellow
Try to remember and if you remember then follow.

Try to remember when life was so tender
That no one wept except the willow.
Try to remember when life was so tender
That dreams were kept beside your pillow.
Try to remember when life was so tender
That love was an ember about to billow
Try to remember and if you remember then follow.

Deep in December, it's nice to remember,
Although you know the snow will follow;
Deep in December, it's nice to remember,
Without a hurt the heart is hollow;
Deep in December, it's nice to remember,
The fire of September that makes us mellow.
Try to remember, and if you remember, then follow.

tinman: You made me cry (but I liked it). Smile

remember...willow

Take your pick....

How are things in Glocca Morra?
Is that little brook still leaping there?
Does it still run down to Donny cove?
Through Killybegs, Kilkerry and Kildare?
How are things in Glocca Mora?
Is that willow tree still weeping there?
Does that lassie with the twinklin' eye
Come smilin' by, and does she walk away,
Sad and dreamy there not to see me there?
So I ask each weepin' willow and each brook along the way,
And each lass that comes a-sighin "Too ra lay,
How are things in Glocca Morra this fine day?"

How Are Things in Glocca Morra?
Burton Lane

or

Willow weep for me, willow weep for me
Bend your branches green
Along the stream that runs to sea
Listen to my plea
Listen, willow, and weep for me

Gone my lover's dream, lovely summer's dream
Gone and left me here
To weep my tears into the stream
Sad as I can be
Hear me, willow, and weep for me

Whisper to the wind
And say that love has sinned
Leave my heart a-breaking
And making a moan
Murmur to the night
To hide the starry light
So none will find me sighing
And crying all alone

Weepin' willow tree, weep in sympathy
Bend your branches down
Along the ground and cover me
When the shadows fall
Bend, oh willow, and weep for me

Willow, Weep for Me

willow . . . lassie

Did you ever see a lassie a lassie a lassie
Did you ever see a lassie go this way and that?
Go this way and that way and this way and that way
Did you ever see a lassie go this way and that?

Did you ever see a laddie and laddie a laddie
Did you ever see a laddie go this way and that?
Go this way and that way and this way and that way
Did you ever see a laddie go this way and that?

I Love a Lassie

words by Harry Lauder & Gerald Grafton
music by Harry Lauder

verse 1
I love a lassie, a bonnie Hielan' lassie,
If you saw her you would fancy her as well:
I met her in September, popped the question in November,
So I'll soon be havin' her a' to ma-sel'.
Her faither has consented, so I'm feelin' quite contented
'Cause I've been and sealed the bargain wi' a kiss.
I sit and weary weary, when I think aboot ma deary,
An' you'll always hear me singing this---

Chorus

I love a lassie, a bonnie bonnie lassie,
She's as pure as a lily in the dell,
She's sweet as the heather, The bonnie bloomin' heather
Mary, my Scots bluebell

verse 2
I love a lassie, a bonnie Hielan' lassie
She can warble like like a blackbird in the dell.
She's an angel ev'ry Sunday, but a jolly lass on Monday:
She's as modest as her namesake the bluebell.
She's nice, she's neat, she's tidy and I meet her ev'ry Friday:
That's a special nicht, you bet, I never miss.
I'm enchanted, I'm enraptured, since ma heart the darlin'captur'd,
She's intoxicated me with bliss---

chorus

verse 3
I love a lassie, a bonnie Hielan' lassie,
I could sit an' let her tease me for a week:
For the way she keeps behavin' well, I never pay for shavin',
'Cause she rubs ma whiskers clean off with her cheek.
And underneath ma bonnet, where the hair wa, there's none on it
For the way she pats ma head has made me bald.
I know she means no harm, for she'll keep me nice and warm,
On the frosty nichts sae very cauld--

chorus repeat

This perennial favourite from Sir Harry Lauder was inspired by his love for his wife Nancy. If anybody knows when he wrote this song, please let me know. See http://www.sirharrylauder.com/lyrics/index.html for more songs by Sir Harry lauder.

KISS...TIME

As Time Goes By...

This day and age we're living in
Gives cause for apprehension
With speed and new invention
And things like fourth dimension.

Yet we get a trifle weary
With Mr. Einstein's theory.
So we must get down to earth at times
Relax relieve the tension

And no matter what the progress
Or what may yet be proved
The simple facts of life are such
They cannot be removed.]

You must remember this
A kiss is just a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh.
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by.

And when two lovers woo
They still say, "I love you."
On that you can rely
No matter what the future brings
As time goes by.

Moonlight and love songs
Never out of date.
Hearts full of passion
Jealousy and hate.
Woman needs man
And man must have his mate
That no one can deny.

It's still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die.
The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by.

Oh yes, the world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by.

time . . . moonlight

Moonlight Gambler

sung by Frankie Laine, 1956
[Words by Bob Hilliard and Music by Phil Springer]

SPOKEN:
You can gamble for match sticks, you can gamble for gold
The stakes may be heavy or small
But if you haven't gambled for love and lost
You haven't gambled at all

They call me a moonlight gambler
I've gambled for love and lost
When I gamble for love and it isn't in the cards
Oh, what heartaches it can cost me

Win or lose, I'm a moonlight gambler
And a winner is what I long to be
So I'll gamble for love just as long as I live
Till the day Lady Luck smiles at me

You can gamble for match sticks
You can gamble for gold
The stakes may be heavy or small
But if you haven't gambled for love and lost
Then you haven't gambled at all

No, if you haven't gambled for love in the moonlight
Then you haven't gambled at all

So I'll gamble for love just as long as I live
Till the day Lady Luck smiles at me

They call me the moonlight gambler
They call me the moonlight gambler

Number 25 song for 1956. Reached number 3.

moonlight...Lady Luck

Luck be a Lady
~ Loesser
~ Sung by Frank Sinatra

They call you lady luck
But there is room for doubt
At times you have a very un-lady-like way
Of running out

Your on this date with me
The pickin’s have been lush
And yet before the evening is over
You might give me the brush

You might forget your manners
You might refuse to stay
And so the best that I can do is pray

lady luck . . .refuse to stay . . . refuse to go . . .

Each morning, a missionary advertises neon sign
He tells the native population that civilization is fine
And three educated savages holler from a bamboo tree
That civilization is a thing for me to see

So bongo, bongo, bongo, I don't wanna leave the Congo, oh no no no no no
Bingo, bangle, bungle, I'm so happy in the jungle, I refuse to go
Don't want no bright lights, false teeth, doorbells, landlords, I make it clear
That no matter how they coax him, I'll stay right here

I looked through a magazine the missionary's wife concealed (Magazine? What happens?)
I see how people who are civilized bung you with automobile (You know you can get hurt that way Daniel?)
At the movies they have got to pay many coconuts to see (What do they see, Darling?)
Uncivilized pictures that the newsreel takes of me

So bongo, bongo, bongo, he don't wanna leave the Congo, oh no no no no no
Bingo, bangle, bungle, he's so happy in the jungle, he refuse to go
Don't want no penthouse, bathtub, streetcars, taxis, noise in my ear
So, no matter how they coax him, I'll stay right here

They hurry like savages to get aboard an iron train
And though it's smokey and it's crowded, they're too civilized to complain
When they've got two weeks vacation, they hurry to vacation ground (What do they do, Darling?)
They swim and they fish, but that's what I do all year round

So bongo, bongo, bongo, I don't wanna leave the Congo, oh no no no no no
Bingo, bangle, bungle, I'm so happy in the jungle, I refuse to go
Don't want no jailhouse, shotgun, fish-hooks, golf clubs, I got my spears
So, no matter how they coax him, I'll stay right here

They have things like the atom bomb, so I think I'll stay where I "ahm"
Civilization, I'll stay right here!

Hear how they jing, jing-a-ling-a,
Baubles, bangles,
Bright, shiny beads.
Sparkles, spangles,
My heart will sing, sing-a-ling-a,
Wearing baubles, bangles and beads.
I'll glitter and gleam so,
Make somebody dream so,
That someday he may buy me,
A ring, ring-aling-a,
I've heard that's where it leads,
Wearing baubles and bangles and beads.

spangle . . . . sparkles

She's got everything she needs,
She's an artist, she don't look back.
She's got everything she needs,
She's an artist, she don't look back.
She can take the dark out of the nighttime
And paint the daytime black.

You will start out standing
Proud to steal her anything she sees.
You will start out standing
Proud to steal her anything she sees.
But you will wind up peeking through her keyhole
Down upon your knees.

She never stumbles,
She's got no place to fall.
She never stumbles,
She's got no place to fall.
She's nobody's child,
The Law can't touch her at all.

She wears an Egyptian ring
That sparkles before she speaks.
She wears an Egyptian ring
That sparkles before she speaks.
She's a hypnotist collector,
You are a walking antique.

Bow down to her on Sunday,
Salute her when her birthday comes.
Bow down to her on Sunday,
Salute her when her birthday comes.
For Halloween give her a trumpet
And for Christmas, buy her a drum.

She Belongs to Me ~Bob Dylan

paint the daytime black...paint it black

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
I see a line of cars and they're all painted black
With flowers and my love both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a newborn baby it just happens ev'ry day
I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door and it has been painted black
Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts
It's not easy facin' up when your whole world is black
No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue
I could not foresee this thing happening to you
If I look hard enough into the setting sun
My love will laugh with me before the morning comes
I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
I wanna see it painted, painted black
Black as night, black as coal
I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black

Christmas Through Your Eyes
~ Gloria Estefan

Till I had you I didn’t know
That I was missing out
Had to grow up and see the world
Through different shades of doubt
Give me one more chance to dream again
One more chance to feel again
Through your young heart
If only for one day let me try
I wanna see christmas through your eyes
I want everything to be the way it used to be
Back to being a child again thinking the world was mine
I wanna see christmas, christmas through your eyes

one more chance to feel ... one more chance

Just one more chance
To prove it's you alone I care for
Each night I say a little prayer for
Just one more chance

Just one more night
To taste the kisses that enchant me
I'd want no others if you'd grant me
Just one more chance

I've learned the meaning of repentance
Now you're the jury at my trial
I know that I should serve my sentence
Still, I'm hoping all the while
You'll give me

Just one more word
I said that I was glad to start out
But now I'm back to cry my heart out
For just one more chance

Kalleh: We are, after all, women of taste. Wink

I say a little prayer for...I say a little prayer for you

The moment I wake up
Before I put on my makeup
I say a little prayer for you
While combing my hair now
And wond’ring what dress to wear now
I say a little prayer for you

Forever, forever you’ll stay in my heart
And I will love you
Forever, and ever, we never will part
Oh, how I love you
Together, together, that’s how it must be
To live without you
Would only mean heartache for me

I run for the bus now, dear
While riding I think of us, dear
I say a little prayer for you
At work I just take time
And all through my coffee break time
I say a little prayer for you

Forever, forever you’ll stay in my heart
And I will love you
Forever, and ever, we never will part
Oh, how I love you
Together, together, that’s how it must be.
To live without you
Would only mean heartache for me

My darling, believe me
For me there is no one but you
Please love me too
I’m in love with you
Answer my prayer
Say you love me too

I don't know about her good taste. She married me, after all.

We heard this song just last night.

The moment I wake up ...Wake up little Susie

Wake up little Susie, wake up!
Wake up little Susie, wake up!
We've both been sound asleep
Wake up little Susie and weep
The movie's over, it's four o'clock, and we're in trouble deep.
Wake up little Susie! Wake up little Susie!

Well, what are we gonna tell your mama
What are we gonna tell your pop
What are we gonna tell our friends when they say
Ooh-la-la! Wake up little Susie!
Wake up little Susie!

Well, I told your mama that you'd be in by ten
Well, Susie baby, looks like we goofed again
Wake up little Susie! Wake up little Susie!
We gotta go home.

The movie wasn't so hot
It didn't have much of a plot
We fell asleep, our goose is cooked, our reputation is shot;
Wake up little Susie! wake up little Susie!
We gotta go home.

- Everly Brothers, Wake up little Susie

Shu: Even women of excellent taste have been known to suffer momentary lapses in judgment. Smile

Wake Up Little Susie...Susie

Jolly old Saint Nicholas, lean your ear this way
Don't you tell a single soul what I'm going to say
Christmas Eve is coming soon, now, you dear old man
Whisper what you'll bring to me, tell me if you can

When the clock is striking twelve, when I'm fast asleep
Down the chimney with your pack, softly you will creep
All the stockings you will find hanging in a row
Mine will be the shortest one, you'll be sure to know.

Johnny wants a pair of skates, Susie wants a dolly
Nellie wants a picture book, she thinks dolls are folly
As for me, my little brain isn't very bright
Choose for me, dear Santa Claus, what you think is right

Johnny wants a pair of skates, Susie needs a sled
Nellie wants a story book, one she hasn't read
As for me I hardly know, so I’ll go to rest
Choose for me, dear Santa Claus, what you think is best

I am unable to find out the composer. Anyone?

Saranita, I love that Burt Bacharach song, too!

Susie...Down the chimney

Santa Baby
~ written by J. Javits and P. Springer
~ originally sung by Ertha Kitt

Santa baby, slip a sable under the tree, for me
I've been an awful good girl
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa baby, an out-of-space convertible too, light blue
I'll wait up for you dear
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight

Think of all the fun I've missed
Think of all the fellas that I haven't kissed
Next year I could be oh so good
If you'd check off my Christmas list
Boo doo bee doo

Santa honey, I wanna yacht and really that's
Not a lot
I've been an angel all year
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa cutie, there's one thing I really do need, the deed
To a platinum mine
Santa cutie, and hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa baby, I'm filling my stocking with a duplex, and checks
Sign your 'X' on the line
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight

Come and trim my Christmas tree
With some decorations bought at Tiffany's
I really do believe in you
Let's see if you believe in me
Boo doo bee doo

Santa baby, forgot to mention one little thing, a ring
I don't mean a phone
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight

Hurry down the chimney tonight
Hurry down the chimney tonight

Down the chimney...good...betterWink

Thorn in my side.
You know that’s all you ever were.
A bundle of lies.
You know that’s all that it was worth...
I should have known better
But I trusted you at first.
I should have known better
But I got what I deserved...

To run away from you
Was all that I could do.
To run away from you
Was all that I could do.

Thorn in my side.
You know that’s all you’ll ever be.
So don’t think you know better
’cause that’s what you mean to me...
I was feeling complicated.
I was feeling low.
Now everytime I think of you
I shiver to the bone...

Thorn in my Side - Eurythmics

Tenuous link, I know (I prefer to think of it as 'creative', lol), but this song is quite significant to me at the moment.

Run Away... Mind

Runaway by Linkin Park

Graffiti decorations
Under a sky of dust
A constant wave of tension
On top of broken trust
The lessons that you taught me
I learn were never true
Now I find myself in question
(They point the finger at me again)
Guilty by association
(You point the finger at me again)

I wanna run away
Never say goodbye
I wanna know the truth
Instead of wondering why
I wanna know the answers
No more lies
I wanna shut the door
And open up my mind

Paper bags and angry voices
Under a sky of dust
Another wave of tension
Has more than filled me up
All my talk of taking action
These words were never true
Now I find myself in question
(They point the finger at me again)
Guilty by association
(You point the finger at me again)

I wanna run away
Never say goodbye
I wanna know the truth
Instead of wondering why
I wanna know the answers
No more lies
I wanna shut the door
And open up my mind

I'm gonna run away and never say goodbye
(gonna run away gonna run away gonna run away gonna run away)
I'm gonna run away and never wonder why
(gonna run away gonna run away gonna run away gonna run away)
I'm gonna run away and open my mind
(gonna run away/mind gonna run away gonna run away/mind mind gonna run away mind gonna run away/mind gonna run away gonna run away gonna run away/mind)

I wanna run away
Never say goodbye
I wanna know the truth
Instead of wondering why
I wanna know the answers
No more lies
I wanna shut the door
And open up my mind

I wanna run away
and open up my mind
I wanna run away
and open up my mind
I wanna run away
and open up my mind
I wanna run away
and open up my mind

A bit of traditional, juvenile myrmecology - study of ants. (That part of entomology, not etymology.)

I wanna shut the door ... stops to shut the door

The ants go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching one by one, / The little one stops to suck his thumb
And they all go marching down
. . . .to the ground
. . . . . . . .To get out
. . . . . . . . . . . .of the rain, BOOM! BOOM!

The ants go marching two by two, hurrah, hurrah (repeat)
The ants go marching two by two, The little one stops to tie his shoe …

The ants go marching three by three, The little one stops to climb a tree …
The ants go marching four by four, The little one stops to shut the door
The ants go marching five by five, The little one stops to take a dive …
The ants go marching six by six, The little one stops to pick up sticks …
The ants go marching seven by seven, The little one stops to pray to heaven …
The ants go marching eight by eight, The little one stops to shut the gate …
The ants go marching nine by nine, The little one stops to check the time …

The ants go marching ten by ten, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching ten by ten, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching ten by ten,
The little one stops to say "THE END"
And they all go marching down
. . . .to the ground
. . . . . . . .To get out
. . . . . . . . . . . .of the rain, BOOM! BOOM!

everything's alright ... everything is alright

I'm a poorman's son, from across the railroad tracks,
The only shirt I own is hangin' on my back,
But I'm the envy of ev'ry single guy
Since I'm the apple of my girl's eye.
When we go out stepping on the town for a while
My money's low and my suit's out of style,
. . . .But it's all right if my clothes aren't new
. . . .Out of sight because my heart is true.
. . . .She says baby ev'rything is alright, uptight, out of sight.

She's a pearl of a girl, I guess that's what you might say,
I guess her folks brought her up that way,
The right side of the tracks, she was born and raised
In a great big old house, full of butlers and maids.
No one is better than I, I know I'm just an average guy,
No football hero or smooth Don Juan,
Got empty pockets, you see I'm a poorman's son.
She says give her the things that money can buy
But I'll never, never make my baby cry. [chorus]

- Stevie Wonder, Uptight (Everything's alright)

everything is alright...I'm just an average guy

Average Guy

~ Lou Reed

I ain't no Christian or no born again saint
I ain't no cowboy or Marxist D.A.
I ain't no criminal or Reverend Cripple from the right
I am just your average guy, trying to do what's right

I'm just your average guy
an average guy
I am just your average guy
I'm just an average guy

I can't say that I've heard this song, and I am quite glad about that! I just found it online, searching for lyrics with "I'm just an average guy." Can you believe those lyrics?!

I ain't no cowboy ... you are a cowboy

As I walked out in the streets of Laredo
As I walked out in Laredo one day
I spied a young cowboy dressed in white linen
Dressed in white linen and cold as the clay

I see by your outfit that you are a cowboy
You see by my outfit that I'm a cowboy, too
We see by our outfits that we are both boys
If you buy an outfit, you can be a cowboy, too

Artist/Band: Nelson Willie
Lyrics for Song: Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys
Lyrics for Album: Essential Willie Nelson
(with Waylon Jennings)

Mama don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys
Don't let 'em pick guitars and drive them old trucks
Make 'em be doctors and lawyers and such
Mama don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys
They'll never stay home and they're always alone
Even with someone they love
Cowboys ain't easy to love and they're harder to hold
And they'd rather give you a song then diamonds or gold
Lonestar belt buckles and old faded Levi's each night begins a new day
And if you don't understand him and he don't die young
He'll probly just ride away
Mama don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys
Don't let 'em pick guitars and drive them old trucks
Make 'em be doctors and lawyers and such
Mama don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys
They'll never stay home and they're always alone
Even with someone they love
Cowboys like smokey old pool rooms and clear mountian moringin's
Little warm puppies and children and girls of the night
And them that don't know him won't like him
And them that do sometimes won't know how to take him
He ain't wrong he's just different
but his pride won't let him do things to make you think he's right
Mama don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys
Don't let 'em pick guitars and drive them old trucks
Make 'em be doctors and lawyers and such
Mama don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys
They'll never stay home and they're always alone
Even with someone they love
Mama don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys
Don't let 'em pick guitars and drive them old trucks
Make 'em be doctors and lawyers and such

Great one, Jerry.

Mmke 'em be doctors and lawyers . . . . there's doctors and there's lawyers

Little boxes on the hillside
Little boxes made of ticky tacky
Little boxes, little boxes, little boxes all the same
There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same
And the people in the houses all go to the university
And they all get put in boxes, little boxes all the same
And there's doctors and there's lawyers and business executives
And they're all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same
And they all play on the golf course and drink their martini dry
And they all have pretty children and the children go to school
And the children go to summer camp and then to the university
And they all get put in boxes, and they all come out the same
And the boys go into business and marry and raise a family
And they all get put in boxes, little boxes all the same
There's a green one, and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

I thought it was the Smothers Brothers who sang this version?

anyway . . .
doctors and lawyers . . . lawyers in love

I can't keep up with what's been going down
I think my heart must just be slowing down
Among the human beings in their designer jeans
Am I the only one who hears the screams
And the strangled cries of lawyers in love

God sends his spaceships to America, the beautiful
They land at six o'clock and there we are, the dutiful
Eating from TV trays, tuned in to Happy Days
Waiting for World War III while Jesus slaves
To the mating calls of lawyers in love

Last night I watched the news from Washington, the capitol
The Russians escaped while we weren't watching them, like Russians will
Now we've got all this room, we've even got the moon
And I hear the U.S.S.R. will be open soon
As vacation land for lawyers in love

Cat, I am so glad you said that! I remember it as the Smothers Brothers also, but when I double checked, I kept getting the composer info I posted. But if you and I both think it was Tommy and Dick, I say that it was, indeed, the Brothers Smothers! (But Mom always liked you best!)

lawyers in love...Tell me lawyer what to do

Tell me lawyer what to do
I think I'm falling in love with you
Defend me from the way I feel
Won't you give me some advice
On how to handle my private life
I'm sure we can make a deal
I confess I'm a fool for men with a clever mind
But your intellect ain't no match with this heart of mine

All I want is a little reaction
Just enough to tip the scales
I'm just using my female attraction
On a typical male, on a typical male

Your sense of justice I'll embrace
But your defense don't help my case
I'm deep in trouble with the law
Something about authority
Seems to bring out the bad in me
Hey lawyer, gotta catch me when I fall
Oh, they say that you match your wits with the best of them
But I know when I'm close you're just like the rest of them

All I want is a little reaction
Just enough to tip the scales
I'm just using my female attraction
On a typical male, on a typical male

So put your books aside
Loosen up your suit and tie
Gotta open up your heart and let me in
Open up your heart and let me in

Typical Male

Tell me lawyer what to do / I think I'm falling in love with you .... there once was a lawyer

There once was a lawyer they called Mr. Clay.
He had but two clients and they wouldn't pay.
At last of starvation he grew so afraid,
That he courted and married a wealthy old maid.

At the wedding the lawyer made one big mistake,
'Twas not in omitting the wine or the cake,
The ring was well chosen, they had a big feed,
But the lawyer did not get a warranty deed.

[Chorus:]He's a very unfortunate, very unfortunate, very unfortunate man. Oh yes ...
He's a very unfortunate, very unfortunate,
very unfortunate man.

there once was a lawyer . . . courted . . . courting

Froggie went a-courtin and he did ride, uhuh, uhuh
Froggie went a-courtin and he did ride, uhuh, uhuh
Froggie went a-courtin and he did ride,
Sword and pistol by his side, uhuh, uhuh.

Well he rode down to Miss Mouse’s door
Where he had often been before

He took Miss Mousie on his knee
Said “Miss Mousie will you marry me”

I’ll have to ask my Uncle Rat
See what he will say to that

Well, Uncle Rat laughed and shook his fat sides
To think his niece would be a bride

Well, Uncle Rat rode off to town
To buy his niece a wedding gown

Where will the wedding supper be
Way down yonder in a hollow tree

What will the wedding supper be
A fried misquito and a roasted flea

First to come in were to little ants
Fixing around to have a dance

Next to come in was a bumble bee
Bouncing a fiddle on his knee

Next to come in was a fat sassy lad
Thinks himself as big as his dad

Thinks himself a man indeed
Because he chews the tobacco weed

And next to come in was a big tomcat
He swallowed the frog and the mouse and the rat

I found site attributing these lyrics to Bob Dylan, but I thought it was (is) a traditional children's song. Anyone have a good site for this sort of information?

Yes, the Smothers Brothers sang Laredo, a parody of Cowboy's Lament, in 1962.

Malvina Reynolds was a songwriter and social activist. She wrote Little Boxes in 1961 while traveling on a California freeway with her husband. She was inspired by a string of houses that all looked pretty much alike, coining the word "ticky-tacky" (OED Online) to describe them. I've heard she wrote it in 19 minutes. Pete Seeger sang it at Carnegie Hall in 1963.

She also wrote children's songs.

This is Version 1 of Froggie Went A-Courtin', first appearing in Wedderburn's "Complaynt of Scotland," according to Barb Diederich. She lists 20 versions under this title. Bob Dylan's is Version 8. She also lists the song, or variants of it, under other titles.

courting . . . bumble bee

King Kong Kitchie Kitchie Ki-Me-O (Kemo Kimo Version 10)
Chubby Parker, 1928

A froggie went a courting and he did ride
King kong kitchie kitchie ki-me-o
with a sword and a pistol by his side
King kong kitchie kitchie ki-me-o.

Chorus: Ki-mo-ke-mo ki-mo-ke,
Way down yonder in a hollow tree
An owl and a bat and a bumble bee
King kong kitchie kitchie ki-me-o.

He rode 'til he came to miss mousie's door,
King kong kitchie kitchie ki-me-o
And there he knelt upon the floor,
King kong kitchie kitchie ki-me-o.

Chorus: Ki-mo-ke-mo ki-mo-ke,
Way down yonder in a hollow tree
An owl and a bat and a bumble bee
king kong kitchie kitchie ki-me-o.

He took miss mouse upon his knee
King kong kitchie kitchie ki-me-o
And he said little mouse will you marry me
King kong kitchie kitchie ki-me-o.

Miss mouse had suitors three or four
King kong kitchie kitchie ki-me-o
And there they came right in the door
King kong kitchie kitchie ki-me-o.

They grabbed Mr. frog and began to fight
King kong kitchie kitchie ki-me-o,
In the hollowed tree it was a terrible night,
King kong kitchie kitchie ki-me-o.

Mr. frog brought the suitors to the floor
King kong kitchie kitchie ki-me-o,
With the sword and the pistol he killed all four
King kong kitchie kitchie ki-me-o.

They went to the park on the very next day
King kong kitchie kitchie ki-me-o,
And left on their honeymoon right away
King kong kitchie kitchie ki-me-o.

Now they live far off in a hollow tree
King kong kitchie kitchie ki-me-o,
Where they now have wealth and children three
King kong kitchie kitchie ki-me-o.
