...apparently is email with exclamation points, at least according to an article in the Tribune. The author points out 5 transgressors:

1) New hires - they are too eager to show a positive attitude. They'll be given a pass, but not for long.

2) Reciprocal users - That is, you can't help responding with an ! when others use them.

3) Excited closers - Adding a little more oomph the sign-off, such as Thanks!

4) The sarcastic exclamation point - Under the guise of sincerity or joy, though intended to be sardonic. (Frankly, there should be a word for that.)

5) Human exclamation points - These people are chipper and peppy in email and real life. They seem happy, but the author is skeptical, at best.

How to stop using them? Cold turkey, he says.

As you know, that will be hard for me. What about you?
