Runny Babbit: A Billy Sook: Poems and Drawings a New Book by Shel Silverstein
Before he died in 1999, Shel Silverstein had written a new book called Runny Babbit: A Billy Sook: Poems and Drawings (LB 0060256532 $18.89 list, TR 0060256532 $17.99 list). The book, which celebrates spoonerisms (a transposition of consonant sounds from two or more words—named for the Rev. W. A. Spooner, a British cleric and scholar, who was especially guilty of this verbal mix-up), will be available March 15th, 2005.

It has occurred to me that many of you may have no idea who the great Shel Silverstein was! Yikes! Horrors!

Well, your Dark Ages are now over, as I am going to enlighten you.

First, a link to my favorite poem of his.

Then, a link to a very sweet poem.

Now, a link to his official website.

Enjoy!

Oh good! I mean - I am so glad you know his work! I was just assailed by insecurity (can you imagine)??? Glad to know you have read his poems! He did truly wonderful things for children's poetry and children's literature.

Actually he's hardly known at all over here. I think I only know of him because CJ wrote about him here once. (If it wasn't CJ then I apologise to whoever it was for getting that wrong)

Here's the thread. TrossL was the one to mention his name first, but CJ posted the most about him.

Well! What a fabulous link! Bob!!!! What a fabulous poem! I thoroughly enjoyed it, and in fact ask your permission to share it with some colleagues! What fun!

And yes, it reminds me of the wit and clever use of language that Uncle Shelby employed. Great work!

Be my guest. Just let people know all about the modest genius who wrote it and put the royalty cheque in the post. Smile

Does anyone have a copy of Freakin' at the Freaker's Ball? I played mine till the vinyl wore out, and I've never been able to find or afford a replacement. Some truly classic songs on that record. (for those of you who don't know what a record is... Big Grin )

I'd never heard of the record, but I searched for and found it in my library (CD version, not LP) and promptly put in a hold request for it. Amazon has the album. There are several albums containing that song. And here are the lyrics. I can't wait to hear it.

The album has such classics as...

I saw Polly at the pornie with a pony

Don't give a dose to the one you love most (we used to play that at the LA Free Clinic just before we opened the doors for the late afternoon STD clinic)

Stacy Brown Got Two (guess what he's got two of? Not the usual... Eek )

and one of my favorites: I got stoned and I missed it.

It's kinda hard to realize that this is the same guy who wrote Where The Sidewalk Ends.

LOL

I don't understand. She won't have to wait for the lift. I live on the ground floor.

Bob Hale - Shel Silverstein has nothing on you! He just got published and you should have... What other gems are you hiding from us?

Who needs American $$$ anyway? Smile
