I've never thought of starting a bluffing game before because I've always been sure that you'd all know the answer. However, CW has nagged me into doing it anyway so see how you get on.

the only thing that you can be certain of is that arnie will get it.

Purdie, do you know how to play? You send Doad a daffynition, that is something that you make up. You can send it by PM, which means to you to Go, My space, Private messaging. Then you click on "New Message." You will have to add Doad to your contacts, and then invite him to a private message. A private message screen will pop up, and you can send him your daffynition. Doad will post all the daffynitions, along with the correct definition, and then we all choose the answer that we think (or in arnie's case, knows!) is right. We don't keep score, but I imagine that both Jo and arnie are on top.

Come play with us! Big Grin

Leenol (and Purdy),

There's not much point in giving your daffynition in the open forum thread where everyone can see it. Once they see it in the list of daffynitions they will know yours is a fake! Smile

The easiest way to send a PM to Doad is to click on his name to the left of his last post, just above his avatar. Choose "Invite Doad to a Private Topic" from the menu, and you'll get a private message box come up where you can type in your daffynition. Of course, you could also just tell him what it is when you see him at school. Wink

Okay, we'll look into that. (Arnie?) Meantime, I guess it would be best to have the "private messages" delivered in person! I think they have mostly to do with what was mentioned in the couple of posts above: your "daffynitions" are supposed to be sent in anonymously, and then we see how many people (if any!) will think they're the real meaning of the word they (supposedly) never heard of before. "Chiliasm," in this round.

I think they mean Doad doesn't want to get PMs from Leenol & Purdie, rather than a problem with the board. If I'm wrong, please let me know.

OK folks, here's your list and it's quite a few to choose from:

1) A rift between people resulting from a divergence of feelings or opinions.

2) A long vista with mountain ranges.

3) A type of mole, especially on the face and often with protruding hairs.

4)Doctrine that Christ will reign on Earth for a thousand years.

5) A speech defect characterised by too long a pause between words, particularly those that are alliterative.

6) The practice of statistical analysis.

7) Acute physiological reaction to overindulgence in hot peppers.

8) (Rhetoric) A long discourse in which the speaker reproaches the audience in order to incite them.

9) A gap in logic or incorrect syllogism wherein the minor premise does not support the conclusion.

10) The feeling you get after consuming a truly great bowl of chilli.

11)A giant cleft in the mountains of South ASmerica, along the Chilian border.

12) A premonition of things to come; a sense of great changes or cosmic happenings.

I think it's a rift between mole-faced chili eaters whose brains have been fried so they can't construct proper syllogisms, but do, because of the toxic effect of the chili, have premonitions of parousia. However, since I have to pick just one, and because nobody's picked it, I'll pick 3.

Where in the heck is arnie? Wink

Oh, well, I will pick #7, even though I am fairly sure it is too obvious.

May I check with an expert, please?

Okay, my Contact says I should select Definition FOUR.

Sorry it's taken me a while to confirm the result here but I'm rather preoccupied with redecorating the house at the moment. As Arnie has now posted his choice and you all know he's right all the time I may as well not wait any longer. I'm sure you'll now all be stunned to know that the correct definition is in fact number 4. I shall now have to make it my life's work to find a word that Arnie doesn't know. Big Grin

Okay, my _Contact_ by Carl Sagan, 1985ish says right here on Page 316, with "chiliast" on page 271 I should select Definition FOUR.

So I did.

Well, Jo is very close to arnie in getting these right, that's for sure.

Thank you, Asa, for picking mine. It was my personal favorite! I wonder if there is a name for those kinds of moles.

Who's up next?

I didn't know the word and don't know who provided which definition, but I picked 7 because chiliasm sounded like it could have been coined from the words chili spasm or, perhaps, depending on how good the chili is, chili orgasm.

#4 seemed too obvious, given that easter is so close. Silly me! I've only heard it called millinarianism, but then I don't hang out with any Greeks. Oh, well...

Anyway, Doad, good job!

Huh? did you say something, Tinny? I didn't hear you as I was busy eating some really fabulous chili . . .

Doad, can you please go back and tell us who concocted each definition? Thanks!

Does not Chiliasm and its thousand-year reign also come with the darker prediction that Armageddon will follow ?
