I have seven from five people at the moment. Keep them coming. And be imaginative!

Eight now but still only five people. I'll add a couple of my own and the real one and post the list late tomorrow (my time).

Time for a last burst of creativity. Come on please - make your bum fit.

Last call for fit bums.
I'll be posting the entries in about four hours.

Several of these are mine (making up the numbers), one of them is correct and the others are... well, others.

1. An article of clothing that is ill-fitting.

2. The part of a guitar that lifts the strings away from the fretboard.

3. A person whose clumsiness and lack of manual dexterity causes items to be dropped or broken.

4. A comfortable pair of jog pants.

5. From bum (arse) and fit (matching of size and/or contour), covering one's mistakes or untruths

6. The number fifteen as used by shepherds in northern England when counting sheep.

7. To be in a foul mood

8. A city in north-western Australia

9. Objectionable orders or instructions that you do not want to obey.

10. The paperwork generated by British armed forces and government offices.

11.A cushiony support attached to the derrière to prevent injury from a fall while skating.

12. A savoury confectionery popular in India during the days of the British Empire.

13. A riding saddle.

14 A clown or comedic actor, one who amuses.

Wow, many of them are so much more creative than mine was.

My favorite is: #5, though I also liked #11.

I suspect the real definition is: #9.

Both 6 and 7 are the ones that I am considering for the correct one. Since I can only choose one correct one, I will go with number 7 with 6 as the most creative.

I'm pretty sure it's either 9 or 10, but don't remember which, if either. I'll guess 9.

Bumfit

1. An article of clothing that is ill-fitting. (Sattva)

2. The part of a guitar that lifts the strings away from the fretboard. (me)

3. A person whose clumsiness and lack of manual dexterity causes items to be dropped or broken. (Sattva)

4. A comfortable pair of jog pants. (Kalleh)

5. From bum (arse) and fit (matching of size and/or contour), covering one's mistakes or untruths (Geoff)

6. The number fifteen as used by shepherds in northern England when counting sheep. (real)

7. To be in a foul mood (Geoff)

8. A city in north-western Australia (haberdasher)

9. Objectionable orders or instructions that you do not want to obey. (me)

10. The paperwork generated by British armed forces and government offices. (arnie)

11.A cushiony support attached to the derrière to prevent injury from a fall while skating. (sattva)

12.A savoury confectionery popular in India during the days of the British Empire. (me)

13.A riding saddle. (sattva)

14. A clown or comedic actor, one who amuses. (sattva)

As you can see the rather surprising answer is

6. The number fifteen as used by shepherds in northern England when counting sheep.

The specific forms of counting vary from district to district. Wikipedia has a long article on it.

A few thoughts on the entries.

Quite a lot of entries focussed on a more literal interpretation with definitions involving bums and fitting.

arnie's paper work and my objectionable order clearly both came from "bumf" which is the word we use for tedious and pointless printed stuff.

I rather liked sattva's clumsy person which may well have been trying to make us think "bump it" and Geoff's foul mood sounded plausible - "He's a bit bumfit today".

It could so easily be a city in Australia - you know what those Aussies are like. Big Grin

My savoury confection was a distracter to try to get people muddling it with "comfit".

Interestingly sattva's late entry of a riding saddle ties to my own definition about the guitar because the bit of the guitar I described is actually called a saddle.

And it also does sound like it could be another word for a clown.

Nice collection of definitions there.

Oh, one last thing I did consider using either yan (1), tan (2) or tethera (3) as my word rather than bumfit (15) but thought they might be more widely known.

Damn! I haven't popped into WC for a few days so I missed the listing of the daffynitions so I missed the reveal as well.

As it happens I knew bumfit was a Cumbrian number in the yan, tan, tethera ... series, but didn't recall that it stood for 15.

You know if ANYONE else said that we'd all be saying "yeah, yeah... of course you did".
