Bluffing Game: Coffle
Shu gave me this word - he always has good ideas. Please come up with your daffynitions and PM them to me. The more the merrier!

I've seen it but cannot remember its meaning. I hope I don't recognize it when it's posted!

Daffys sent.

Well, heck. You'll probably recognize it then.

Thanks for your daffies. Now, folks, please follow Geoff's lead!

I need more daffies! Please?

I have a few, but I need more. Send me some and I'll post this weekend. Bob, where is yours? Proof? Bethree?

Do you refer to Dippy Donald?

Well said, Hab. When the truth doesn't even matter, life becomes topsy turvy. Sometimes I can't even believe what I hear from our "leaders."

Kalleh, do you mean when you say, "When the truth doesn't even matter....", such statements as, "alternative facts"? Wink

I know! Have you ever heard of anything so ridiculous?

I was at a meeting all this week and was very busy from morning to night. I have to admit, it was great not being able to listen to, or read, the news. Of course, I caught myself up today, with a delayed plane and all, and I feel so embarrassed. Heck, the Mexican president looks like more of a leader than ours does.

Any more daffies for "coffle?" I'll post them tomorrow, along with the real definitions. Remember, don't cheat and look up the word.

I had no desire to do so, until you said don't do it. LOL

No, no Sattva! (Can you tell I've been babysitting my new little granddaughter while her parents take a well-deserved vacation on the Cayman Islands?)

I can't post the daffynitions, along with the correct definition, tonight because there was a situation with one of the entries. I've contacted the person and will get these up as soon as I can.

Was it detained at the airport?

Big Grin Good heavens, we are having our problems here in the U.S. aren't we?

Here are the daffynitions, but one is the real thing. Which one?

1. A coffee toffee dessert, usually a pie.

2. A slave working on a coffee plantation.

3. A small chest or strongbox.

4. A line of animals, prisoners, or slaves chained and driven along together.

5. The rim of a tin can that is opened with a key, like an old Spam can.

6. A wooden peg fastener used in early post and beam construction.

7. A treasury, funds, or safe-deposit box.

8. An attempt to hide a mistake while speaking by coughing, sighing, or laughing.

9. A litter of collie puppies.

Start your selections! I know, some are very similar. It just turned out that way.

Sorry I'm late posting.

I'll go for 4.

Hah! Gotcha before you posted answer.
Cast my vote for #6

p.s. I love this word.

Well, of course arnie got it right. Ho hum. What else is new... Tinman and Bob got it, too. I blame Shu - he gave me the word. Mad

Here are the authors of the daffys (or is it ies? We'll never know):

1) Mine and I enticed Sattva. The word reminded me of a delicious coffee toffee pie I make.

2) Very close to the real thing - arnie's, but no takers

3) Hab's - Similar to Sattva's, but no takers

4) The real thing!

5) Geoff's - no takers

6) Geoff's - Fooled Hab on this one

7) Sattva - no takers

8) Sattva - no takers, but I loved it!

9) Sattva - no puppy takers

Kalleh, maybe we should invent a word to go with the number eight definition. What do you say?

I ran across the word coffle in The Book of Negroes, a 2007 historical novel by the Canadian writer Lawrence Hill. It was titled Someone Knows My Name in the United States, Australia and New Zealand, according to Wikipedia. It's also as a CD and a downloadable audio book at my library. I just discovered a TV miniseries was made of it, and I've put a hold on it. I'll probably listen to the CD or audio book later. There are always words I'm not sure how to pronounce and it's nice to hear them read with, supposedly, their correct pronunciation and in an appropriate dialect. It's based on the historical document, Book of Negroes.

Here's the paragraph with the word coffle in it. Maybe that will pique your interest.
quote:
The next thing you know, Fomba and Aminata are captured on the way back from delivering a baby in another village. Aminata’s mother has been killed. They are bound, so that they can’t escape. They walk past their village, and Aminata watches as her father is shot with a gun, through the chest. The captors, stripped the captives naked, and made them walk in a coffle. [Coffle=A line of animals, prisoners, or slaves chained and driven along together.]

I recognized it when I saw the real definition, but had forgotten it. Thus my whimsical vote. BTW, Hab DID have a taker - me!

Good round!
