I've received six daffynitions so far, from Proofreader, Asa Lovejoy, wordmatic, stella, Kalleh, and jerry thomas. Any more for the Skylark?

I just had a thought about Balter.
Is he not the same Balter Rawltar
Who consoled our poor Jeb
At his life's lowest ebb
Before Jeb had christened Gibraltar?

The daffynitions:
  1. acronym for Better Arrive Late Than Earn Regrets ... (this is a regionalism, found only in the area of North Chicago)
  2. an intestinal ailment in horses, caused by a parasite
  3. a floating hoist used in wooden ship construction
  4. a rough-hewn shelf for the display of hunting trophies
  5. a type of wooden fishing boat
  6. to stick together
  7. a shelter or resting place of a wild animal; a hole or den
  8. to divide a field into smaller parcels of land
  9. (Slang) fall on one's head when riding at full speed

Guess away!

Eight for me. I recall that the French people who had the nous around their necks were put into these fields for burial. The first burials allowed for each grave to have an enormous amount of land surrounding it, but as the war progressed and more an more were executed, the fields had to be subdivided and became smaller and smaller until the final bodies were buried standing up. Oh, the horrors of war!

Any more guesses? I see Stella is missing from those who provided daffynitions. You don't have to have sent in a daffynition first, though!

Sorry, Arnie. It's, you know, Christmas. Smile

I haven't got a clue either so I'll stick with #6. Thanks.

The results:
  1. acronym for Better Arrive Late Than Earn Regrets ... (this is a regionalism, found only in the area of North Chicago)

This came from jerry (not north Chicago)

  2. an intestinal ailment in horses, caused by a parasite

    Proofreader's suggestion, fooling Asa

  3. a floating hoist used in wooden ship construction

Asa's effort, which conned Kalleh and jerry.

  4. a rough-hewn shelf for the display of hunting trophies

From Wordmatic's library, but too rough to fool anyone

  5. a type of wooden fishing boat

Stella's invention, which mislead wordmatic and Bob.

  6. to stick together

The true definition. Stella guessed right! Maybe I should have posted these answers a day earlier? Wink

  7. a shelter or resting place of a wild animal; a hole or den

    From Kalleh; no takers

  8. to divide a field into smaller parcels of land

This came from Bob and fooled Bethree and Proofreader

  9. (Slang) fall on one's head when riding at full speed

My own daffynition which failed to attract any interest Frown

Who's up next?

Is this a record? Three of our daffynitions fooled two people.

Good going, Stella! A stellar job!
