Hot off the presses:
German is peppered with English words ... The language flow the other way has not been so extreme however. Now the Goethe institute may be the cause of another German word entering everyday English. It held a competition to find the word that would most benefit the English language. The winner, announced today (8 December) is 'Fachidiot,' with the person nominating it saying it could be clumsily translated by "Idiot of your own subject." |

It's interesting that the LEO German-English-German dictionary gives 'nerd' for Fachidiot, and this seems to be based on a single conversation in the forums there. You might also want to look at the entries for Fach.
I am courious why they decapitalized (lowercased) the i in Goethe Institute. —Ceci n'est pas un seing. |
