The Chicago Tribune had a summary of the NEA's "To Read or Not to Read," which compiled data from "more than 40 sources -- including studies by the U.S. Departments of Education and Labor, the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, Indiana University and UCLA -- that looked at reading habits and outcomes." Here is a brief summary of their findings:

Readers do better in school and the job market than non-readers. But they're also more socially connected. People who read are more avid concert- and theater-goers. They're more likely to hit the gym. They play more sports -- thus meeting more people and being more, you know, interactive.
