Yes - we've had an excellent suggestion for a new book. If you'd like to find a copy and join us in reading/discussing this book, please do! I've ordered a copy from my local library and should have it by the end of the week.

It comes highly recommended by our new poster, Willowshiver. There are also 2 reviews on Amazon.

Read some or all of the book and we'll aim to discuss it . . . hmm . . . in a few weeks? How about around Dec. 3?

Thanks for taking the lead on this, CW. I will dump my current reading material and read this.

I hope we can get this book group started again!

I finally bought the book. Has anyone started it? There was a note on the cover saying something about "having the stomach to read it." I wonder what that means!

I just got my copy the other day. There was a bit of a waiting list on it. When do you all think you'll be ready to talk about it?

Well I bought a copy and am ready to start reading (just as soon as I've fineshed Neil Gaiman's "American Gods").
I do have a question. Given that the post that suggested it was the one and only post from "willowshiver" does anyone think that this may be an author or publisher's way of increasing sales? Go round the online reading groups posting a recommendation. I know of at least one fuss on the internet about that happening and, call me paranoid if you like, this looks like the same kind of thing to me.

Oh, heck, Bob, I hope not. I can tell you that from reading about it, it wouldn't be a book I'd normally buy. However, I did buy it for this thread. I have 2 chapters left in my other book, and then I will start it seriously. I have started it, but I am dying to finish my other book.

Let's just read it now that we've bought it, but next time we'll be more careful.

You may well be right, Bob, but I don't think so. The fact that willowshiver doesn't seem to have put in an appearance since posting the recommendation does seem a little odd, I agree.

However, the book was published in 2004 so it does seem rather late for anyone to try to "puff up" sales. I'd also have thought that they'd have given a link to Amazon or the publisher.

Well, I have bought and started the book, and I just can't get into it. It is a documentary sort of book about the NY Police Department.

Has anyone else read it yet?

I've been meaning to get down to listening to it, but I've still got "The World is Flat" going in my car. I've got Blue Blood right here, though, and will give the first disc a listen today. Pity you didn't just get it from the library, Kalleh!

Yes, I agree. Because I actually bought it, I am going to read it. I have a trip to San Diego in January; it's a long flight so I will read it then. Who knows, maybe it will improve.

Where is willowshiver anyway? Roll Eyes

I have started but haven't had time to get very far. I quite like the annecdotal style but I'm not sure it won't grate on my nerves by the end. It is a log book.

That was why I didn't like it, Bob. Plus before that I had just read "Teacher Man" by Frank McCourt, which was similarly a journal of all his experiences as a teacher. To read 2 books in a row like that was too much!
