Bluffing Game: philluminist

<Proofreader>Bluffing Game: philluminist
I've moved this game here to avoid conflict with limericks.
I've given a word in the title and your mission is to send me your definition - without looking up in a dictionary (assuming you could find it there) via PM to me. There is no limit to the idiocies you can produce but they should at least be capable of fooling the other competitors.
So let's see your definitions for "philluminist".
August 14, 2016, 17:02
BobHaleYou'll need to keep a check on it, proof. Things tend to get lost in "wordgames" because the other threads here are the fast moving ones with lots of posts like the dis- thread. IIRC that's why the other one was split off from it to begin with.
Anyway. I sent you a couple.
"No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.
August 15, 2016, 21:22
arnieAre you sure you spelled the word correctly, Proof? I know a word, "phillum
enist", that I think you meant.
Anyway, I'll send in a PM.
Build a man a fire and he's warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.
August 15, 2016, 23:25
BobHaleWe can safely assume that arnie knows the answer then. But that's kind of a given.

Arnie's just carrying on in the old bardic tradition. He just chose to memorise the OED instead of ancient sagas.

August 16, 2016, 23:16
arnieThe OED is a trifle large. I've only managed a condensed dictionary.

Build a man a fire and he's warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.
August 17, 2016, 00:45
BobHaleIs that like condensed milk?

BobHaleFor our new members...
The official aim of this game is twofold. First you are trying to fool as many people as you can with your definition and second you are trying to select the correct definition from all those provided.
The actual aim of the game has mutated into an attempt to find a word that arnie doesn't know.

September 04, 2016, 22:28
BobHaleI absolutely know it's wrong but I shall, as is my habit, choose the one that I
like the best, which is number 7.

GeoffI'm with Haberdasher on this one. #8 for me.
Several entries referring to illumination, yet nobody suggested it might be a member of the Illuminati sect.
September 17, 2016, 04:41
GeoffHey, what happened to this game? Give us the answer,Proof!
September 17, 2016, 11:39

haberdasher PHILLUMINIST - One who throws light on the acid/base balance of a chemical solution..That was, of course, meant to imply that the original target had been spelled "
pH-illuminist"
September 18, 2016, 14:34
tinmanA collector of matchbook covers is a
phillumenist.

GeoffSo Hab wins, with me as the ditto-head?
September 18, 2016, 22:44
tinmanYou a ditto-head? I didn't know you liked Rush Limbaugh.
September 23, 2016, 16:20
arnieBah!

I missed this thread having any updates somehow, so I didn't have a chance to post. I happened to know that a phillumenist is a collector of matchbook covers.
Build a man a fire and he's warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.

Of course you do -- now.
September 23, 2016, 22:20
tinmanHe knew it on August 15th, too, when he suggested you may have misspelled the word.
September 24, 2016, 02:59
BobHaleOf course he knew it. This is arnie we're talking about - arnie whose first word as a baby wasn't "Mama" or "Dada", it was "primogenitor".

I was jokingly referring to the thread wherein we discussed Limbaugh's knuckle-dragging acolytes.

And, chances are, he knew that "dada" referred to an early 20th C. art movement, thus had no connection to his male progenitor.

September 24, 2016, 11:44
<Proofreader>Or the infamous dictator Dada Amin.
September 29, 2016, 20:30
KallehOh, my. I missed this game and didn't send in a daffy. So sorry, Proof! I am thinking it's not about light since there are so many here about it, but finally settled on #8. It just couldn't be #7, which is the only one not related to light. #8 is indirectly related, but I chose it anyway.
And, Proof, we'd love for you to write limericks for us again. Been missing you!
September 29, 2016, 20:33
KallehNow I see you had already reported the right one. Shoot - I would have won!
