Headlines
A headline on Yahoo today reads

"Cat with only two right legs"

How many right legs did they expect it to have?

Even more incredible if it had two wrong legs.

I think the cat was missing the left ones. Probably should have been

CAT WITH RIGHT LEGS, ONLY

or

CAT, ONLY RIGHT LEGS, NO LEFT

or, if it was missing them all

CAT, PULL TOY ONLY

Yes, Proof. The cat had only two legs, with no left ones um ... left.

I found several mentions on Yahoo but they all said the video wasn't available in my area, but it's also on YouTube.

Then I guess abrupt right turns are out?

The poor thing! I guess the headline was right correct, though.

In the Chicago Tribune today:

Neighbors Allege Parking Woes Near Baha'i Center

Do they "allege" parking woes? Aren't they just complaining about them? I thought that was an odd use of "allege."

I love headlines and small "newspieces" for they are rife with unintentional humor. The following are not recent examples, and I mention them only because they apparently loom large in my memory:

Newspiece on 680News:

“Paul Bernardo admitted that he raped Jane Doe in court this morning”
... Egad, they’ve caught the man; can't they get him stopped?

Newspiece on Canoe.ca website:

“In Saskatchewan yesterday a bear lunged at a man’s face and bit him in the leg”
... What sort of aim has this bear? Or what is the matter with this man's anatomy?

Headline in Toronto Star:
“Man dies in Scarborough”
.. No he doesn’t, at least not immediately! I’m a man and I have often been to Scarborough.

“Catholic Church to Probe Priest”
... egad, we know that this sort of thing goes on in the Catholic Church, but must we needs proclaim it?

My pet peeve is this:

CAR OPENS FIRE AT CROWD

A person in the car did the deed. Unless it's James Bond's auto, cars usually aren't well-armed.

Another is "the car lost control". No, the driver lost control.

Yes, I love headlines too. Love the one about probing the Priest. Big Grin

It was a bit over the top. But this is what these gaffes are for ... to amuse us all. I've made a few myself, and I have no doubt that I'll unwitteningly do so again!
