Words that annoy
1,173 adults were surveyed in December by Marist College's Institute for Public Opinion on people's opinions on the most annoying words. This survey was first done 5 years ago.

The number 1 most annoying word? Whatever! People consider it "dismissive" and "rude." Some feel it's a put down because it means what the person is saying isn't important. I can't say I disagree.

Others included:
like
you know
just sayin'
obviously

They also asked what words they'd like to see disappear in 2014 - these are definitely U.S. centric:

Obamacare (I couldn't agree more; it's the Affordable Care Act or ACA)
shutdown
gridlock
sequestration

The last 3 seem to be what people don't want to happen, rather than related to the words.

I'd be interested to see an age breakdown for the people surveyed given that the words chosen seem to be entirely selected from the register of young people.

"No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.

Isn't annoy a city in VietNam?

No, it's what you hear when a Jewish person is exasperated.

Yes, Bob, I agree. I had thought the same thing.

Young people are the only ones that matter - or didn't you realize that? Big Grin

Ah, but the young people think it's only the baby boomers who matter. Perspectives are interesting, aren't they?

I'm surprised no one commented on the atrocious pun.

huh? I'm hardly young [64yo!], but I relate to:
Obamacare -- waiting breathlessly to see whether my middle son will have health insurance when he turns 26
Shutdown-- still burning over 28 billion wasted on govt posturing
Gridlock-- this makes me reflect on several yrs of taxpayer-provided nada from congress
Sequestration-- Head Start cut by 400 million (57,000 kids) - just 1 among many

Obamacare --

I was a bit perturbed to hear, on The People's Court TV show, one of the respondents refer to a government disability check which his wife received as an "Obamacheck", as if no one ever got such a benefit before this president's term began.

Bethree, I think Bob was referring to the first list.

oops
rant rescinded

Why rescind it? What US citizen ISN'T sick of our present government? (Unless you're on Wall Street, that is.)

"Some elected representatives...." would be more applicable. They aren't all bums, although it's not easy to pick out the good ones.

Yeah, but I bet we'd all pick out different "good ones." Politics, at least in the U.S. is so blasted divisive these days.
