Words in Print
I am reading a novel where the main character said that some words are only seen in print...such as apparel or slain or assailant or exclaimed. Now, Wordcrafters may use these words in conversation, but still it's an interesting concept. I think he is right.

Do you agree? If so, what are some other examples?

A search for apparel, slain, assailant and exclaimed in the spoken texts of the Corpus of Contemporary American English gives a few results, but not many compared to the results for written texts.

When I saw "apparel," I thought of that Christmas carol, "Deck the Halls," so that is one place where a lot of people at least sing the word!

Aren't "slain" and "assailant" pretty common as spoken words on the NYC metro-area news-- or at least on episodes of Law & Order?
