Opinions sought
I've just written a blog piece about something I attended last night but I've had second thoughts about posting it. I thought I'd put it here and see if people think it would be wise to put it on my blog.

Now the chances of the people it's about ever stumbling across wordcraft are probably nil so I think it's OK here. Honestly, the chances of them stumbling across it on my blog are slim but I do know that some people who know some of them do read my blog so word could potentially get back.

What do you think? Should I post this piece or not?

And, because I've now had opinions and decided not to use it, I'll remove it from here too.

So, to post or not post. That is the question.
What do you think?

If you post anything on a public forum you're potentially allowing anyone with internet access to read it. Posts have an odd habit of turning up via search engines and all sorts of strange routes.

A blog is a public journal. If you're not happy with any member of the public reading something, then don't post it.

I say post it.

I know all of that Guy but there is nothing in it that specifically identifies the event or the people involved BUT a couple of people who know me and know what events are around locally ALSO know (and probably share my opinion of) at least a couple of the others who are, though not named, identifiable in the piece.
Still, as I'm almost certainly not planning to attend again AND I'm leaving the country...

I'm just not sure. I have a feeling that at least one of them would probably react badly to what I've written.

I think at least three would, from your description. I do think it is a little strong, and you could probably convey the same impression using less vituperative language. I'm not suggesting that you do, but that's a third option to bear in mind.

Which option to take, though, is really up to you.

I'm not going to use it. The problem is that it really did feel like I'd wandered into One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest at times and, while I can often legitimately be accused of exaggeration, this isn't one of those times. If anything I have downplayed the scale of the problem. I can't think of any way to say it nicely so it's probably better not to say it at all.

Thanks for the opinions.

I have subscribed to a philosophy not to say something about someone that I would not say to their face.

I don't read your piece as that offensive, but it appears that there are people who you would prefer not to see it. For that reason, it is best that you decided not to use it in my opinion.

(How is that for my first post on my first thread? I have already learned a new word "vituperative", thanks to member arnie.)

Welcome Tom, great to have you here. As I said, I've decided not to go with it so your advice would have been taken.

I hope you enjoy the board

Bob

Tom, you'll learn a lot more words from arnie. He is quite the logphile!

I'd probably post it. After all, poetry really is a personal opinion. You don't like it; others might.

Wow - what an evening you had, though, Bob! Have you considered telling someone from Social Services or something just to see if they might attend and perhaps be able to help the people?

I suppose it's horribly invasive of me to suggest such a thing. I just can't help but feel like they might need help.

It is your blog, thus your opinion, so I feel you're not really revealing yourself by not posting it.

Since I just spoke on social media today to a group of students, there are just so many complexities with this that maybe I'd not post it. While Bob lives in England and probably couldn't be sued by Americans, there are lawsuits out there, suing for invasion of privacy, harrassment or defamation of character. I'd not take the chance.

Yet it is a gray area in our country because of the First Amendment, and, when employers are involved, labor laws.

He's already taken that risk by posting it on this forum. A post on a public forum is no different from a blog post in that respect.

I know. I was just giving my opinion. I have posted things on my blog that Bob has told me I should delete, so I feel comfortable giving my opinion on this.

One thing I learned in writing our social/electronic media guidelines is that, while I knew nothing could ever really be deleted, I didn't know that deleted material can be subpoenaed.

Yes, and I meant mine in the same vein, too.

[Note: I have added a link to "vein" because it took me so long to decide which to use. All three "veins/vanes/vains are used that way in Google, but I have faith in Straight Dope. The dictionary gave me a clue, but wasn't that conclusive to me.]
