GeoffBluffing Game: Gaffer
Most of us are familiar with the movie making
job of gaffer - they're in charge of the lighting - and it's British for "foreman" too.
There's yet another meaning, and that's the one we'll pursue.

GeoffHere are the daffynitions, and the real one:
1. A swindler; a con man.
2. A journeyman bricklayer's assistant. Also known as a Hod Carrier, the gaffer brings the mud to the bricklayers and does all the other laborious tasks to keep the bricklayers busy.
3. The type of club used in seal-culling.
4. A secondary hold in certain types of ship, especially in whalers.
5. A curmudgeon.
6. A really bad joke.
7. A glass blower
8. In the hillbilly sport of barehanded fishing, the person who thrusts his arm into the fish's mouth to catch it.
9. A metal fitting used to join the harnesses of horses in a team.
10. One who regularly drops things; a clumsy person.
One is a real gaffer - which is it?

February 17, 2013, 12:03
KallehPS And I did all of this from my iPhone, even the checking of my private message to Geoff. Not bad!
February 17, 2013, 16:00
GeoffOK, Kalleh, you had good reason! Your son's birthdate is the day before mine.
You folks who follow arnie are, or course, right. (Tom, arnie is right much more often than not)

KallehI am not sure what you mean, Tom? The second or third time for what? The word was discussed
here in 2003.
February 19, 2013, 22:37
