I think there is a typo in Limerick 8, where in Line 3 "but the" should be "but then", but then at least two voters have read straight past it and read what they expected to see.

One must make allowances for Kalleh's typing abilities.

I too saw the error, and assumed it to be a typo.

BTW, Greg, are you boiling where you are? I heard from someone in NSW today who said it was 106F there. Ouch!

I thought they meant to delete the "the". It matches the same no. Of syllables that way.

Not yet but it's coming. First day of the Australian Open Tennis in Melbourne today and the prediction is that it will be around or above 40 Celsius for the next 4 days. Can't imagine how the players are going to cope with those long 5 set matches they have in Grand Slams in that heat, but I guess they can console themselves with how much they get paid to do it, even if they have to withdraw 2nd or 3rd round with fatigue. As for #8 - funny thing. It was sent to me like that, but I questioned the writer about it. "The" was a mistake in L3 so I said I'd remove it. Then when I posted them, I forgot all about it. Sorry about that, limerick writer! If I change it now, the 5 votes will be deleted. So everyone, please delete (in your minds) "the" in L3 of #8.

I guess voting for your favorite is different than creating some definition for a book (or limerick dictionary). For me, as far as voting, I make the adjustments in my head when I read. If I can glean the pronunciation that the author is using by rhyming it with the poem, it "works" for me. They don't have to make it rhyme to my local idiosyncrasies or dialect. Also, if I can see that they put in an extra "the" I just erase it in my reading. Same with pronouncing "Tahiti" in a way that rhymes with 'pity' and 'shitty'. I would normally pronounce it "ta-hee-ti", but I pronounce it "ta-hit-ee" when I read that poem.

Dialects vary considerably regionally and somewhere someone is probably pronouncing Tahiti that way. However, as I told Kalleh when I submitted it, I only used that pron (even though I think it wrong, too) to justify the L5 ending. In a more formal setting, it probably would be totally rejected, just as it was here since the voters fail to appreciate fine art.
