Bluffffffffing Game: Spurtle
Spurtle would be a fine word for the limerick game, but I'll use it here first. PM me your daffynitions, pleeeyuze.

Thanks, Asa. I'm sending you one.

Hmmmmmm..... Only two responses. OK, this game is dead.

Don't kill it, we're just a bit slow. I've sent you one anyway.

Is there an instruction thread on how to play this game so newcomers can join in?

<Asa Lovejoy>
Way back at the beginning there was, but it's just the old Dictionary parlor game. Someone selects a word, says and spells it to the group, then all write down phony "daffynitions" which are passed to the person presenting the word. Then the original person reads all the daffynitions along with the real one, and all others try to identify the real one. In this case, a daffynition goes to me. I'll relent and keep going, since I've now had a couple more.

As I've said to a few people privately, the site has been slow recently for some reason. Slowness on sites begets slowness. This too will change, but we'll have to live with it for awhile.

I agree with Bob, Asa, please don't kill the game. It's a great word, and it surely isn't your fault that the site is slow. I'll send another, and make up 2 of your own. If we have 6 or so, it should work.

To add to what Asa has said concerning the rules, it should be mentioned, even if it seems obvious, that you musn't look up the meaning of the word in a dictionary or elsewhere. If you happen to know the real meaning, don't give that as your daffynition, but make up one of your own.

I've e-mailed CW. If you know how to get in touch with WM, please do so. Whatever, I'll post what I have on Friday morning.

This game has spurtled to an end, so here we go with the answers:

1 A Scottish version of a Sheleilagh.

My own submission, bonking Bob's noggin with it.

2 The sound made by squeak grass when it is thrown into a pot of boiling broth.

Wordmatic boiled her grass and fooled Proofreader.

3 A wet, gurgling sound that is somewhat percussive.

Caterwauller''s submission, fooling Wordmatic.

4 A water-bug.

Haberdasher dashed this off, but nobody bit.

5 A Scottish stirring stick.

Alas, too many of you knew this as the real thing!

6 The fountain that rises from the blowhole of a whale.

Kalleh again

7 A pin used to secure a farm gate.

Bob penned this one.

8 The neglected caveat. Many ancient primitive computer punch cards bore the warning "Do not bend, staple, or spindle." What the caveat writers failed to mention was "spurtle." So many cards got inadvertently spurtled that different kinds of computers had to be developed, which is why we are now where we're at.

Jerry's explanation.

9 The watery substance that precedes the mustard or ketchup in a spouted bottle.

Proofreader squirted this one out.

10 A tunic patterned with white spots

arnie white-spotted Haberdasher.

11 To blow smoke rings.

Did I forget anyone?

Number 5 please.

Nice daffys!

Since most whales don't wear knickers, I'll choose number six.

None of them sound very convincing to me, even my own. So I'll guess number 1.

I choose 5.

I'd take #5 too, if 1 wasn't on the list too.

Since there are already two 5s I'll take 10, and spread the votes around a bit.

A squeak grass (you know it as myrtle)
When thrown in broth made from a turtle
Will squish, splash and clump,
Coalesce in a lump
That the Scots chew till soft: that's called spurtle.

And, due to this knowledge, I choose #2.

5. for me, please.

I posted the results, then they disappeared! Weird! I'll redo it tonight. Gotta go to work now...

Edit: Oh, silly me, I edited the daffynitions/definition post. Just scroll up and read who did what to whom.

I had never heard of a spurtle, and I cannot imagine stirring anything with one. Neither had I heard of squeak grass, and thought I had made it up, so I am amazed to see Proof calling it Myrtle. Now I'll have to google to see if that is true!

Good game, Asa, even if some of us, er, one of us, was slower than molasses at absolute zero.

No, it's me. I saw your post about the results disappearing and didn't scroll up further. So I've been waiting for five days to see an already posted offering.
