TYPEWRITERAs for your side question, well, here is my best
answer!WLOYBZ, which, by the way, is one of my favorite words!
December 16, 2003, 11:08
haberdasherGotcha.
Well, cucuracha is cockroach, which was your original word, and the connection between cockroach and typewriter (all in lower case) was provided by
Don MarquisBLOWSY
WITENESTDecember 16, 2003, 11:49
KallehI believe "blowzy" can be spelled
either way, and I chose the more British way (I think!).
As far as Archie and Mehitibel, we took our kids to it, and we all loved it!
WITENESTTWENTIES
APRTAUROBMELThis might be hard, simply because of the length. If you need hints, let me know.

KallehI am impressed that you didn't even need a hint, Hab
. I don't think I would have gotten it.
BTW, Where is Arnie these days??? It seems to be just you and I (I or me?
) here.
ACHYRIGLODecember 18, 2003, 06:41
haberdasherIt's I, and it's oligarchy. Perhaps general interest is waning. Although I could have fun doing these all day. (In my darker, more introspective moments I accuse myself of showing off. "See how smart I am," I keep trying to convince myself.)
SHEEERY
EDIT: see below

No convincing necessary!
I'm still working here....I lept with glee thinking it was "Hershey", but then my head fell.
The problem with only 2 of us is that I always feel as though I am "on"! BTW, I know that arnie works with schools, so maybe he is on a holiday break? Anyway, I miss him!
December 18, 2003, 12:42
haberdasherSee? Not as smart as I think I am. I've misspelled it: one E too many. It's not SHEEERY after all, but
SHEERY.
But it's still not Hershey. (I would never give a proper name without a warning attached.)

jerry thomasHERESY?
How about an occupation shared by railroaders and electricians?

Ohhhhh! Here I spent an hour giving a presentation, while my mind was elsewhere, thinking of "shee
ery." Obviously, I am hooked!
ANATELSDecember 18, 2003, 14:30
haberdasherI would have thought 'witchcrafts' too, but if it's used by electricians and (railroad) engineers it's more likely
SWITCHCRAFT.
I'll have to work on
ANATELS some more.

For the snow-and-ice victim:
RENT-A-SALT(or maybe that's "for the captain in need of a crew for a short voyage")
December 18, 2003, 15:04
jerry thomas.... it's probably not a proper English word...
Let's try ===>
ASLIGHTINGLYNOROOTORSODecember 18, 2003, 15:15
haberdasherIt looks as if it's trying to be "oto-rhino-laryngologist" but I'm going to have to go back and count the letters...
December 18, 2003, 15:17
haberdasherYes. The mental hook/hint somehow was the ...
GLYN...
December 19, 2003, 08:57
KallehI can't believe you got that, Hab, without even a hint! You definitely deserve the W.E. (Wordcraft Emmy) for that one!
BTW, Jerry, "switchcraft" was just fine; Hab came up with it, again without a hint (Grrrr!). Besides, "witchcrafts" worked as well (I think; e.g. "During the Middle Ages, witches worked with all sorts of 'witchcrafts.'" On second thought, maybe not.
)
So, Hab, do we have another word? [maybe a little easier than otorhinolaryngologist?]

jerry thomasHab, maybe you could make RENT-A-SALT easier for us if you write it in some other language ..... in other words ....
December 19, 2003, 12:59
haberdasherIndeed!
December 19, 2003, 20:51
Kalleh Polymorphonuclear ???? Not sure.
SCUDFENODecember 20, 2003, 06:10
haberdasherPolys: beautiful! And nice anagram of it, too. I was working on "neurophthalmoscopy" but that didn't make it on several counts.
SCUDFENO = unfocused but it would need a second U. Still working on it.

Hear the sledges with the bells --
silver bells!
What a world of merriment their melody foretells!
As they sing out their delight
In the icey air of night
And the stars that oversprinkle all the Heavens seem to twinkle with a crystalline delight,
Keeping time time time
With a sort of Runic rhyme
To the tintinnabulation that so musically wells
From the bells bells bells bells bells bells bells
From the tinkling and the jingling of the bells! -- E. A. Poe

haberdasher...if I have a Roget's and someone just gave me another one, do I now have two
THESAURI?
(I'll give someone else a chance to get the word you really meant rather than give the next scrambled letters.)
Edit: No I won't. Add an O and make another all-five-vowels-one-time-each word. OK, there it is: SEQUIOA, and DIALOGUE, and now
THESAURIO[This message was edited by haberdasher on Sun Dec 28th, 2003 at 19:58.]
December 29, 2003, 16:06
KallehI had been doing a little cross-threading, and I
had meant
thesauri. Is there another word there?
I have been working on "thesaurio," and I don't know that this is right. However, the only word I could find was the English spelling of
authorise. Is that right?
