Bluffing Game: Albedo
Please send a daffynition for albedo via PM.

We've sufficient daffynitions to proceed with posting the possibilities for albedo:

1. A measure of reflectivity, from black to pure white.

2. In a comedy routine, the measure of Jessica Alba's sex drive.

3.An individual Albigensian, or Cathar.

4. A fragrant essential oil derived from the bark and leaves of the cedarwood tree.

5. An amorphous white substance for molding into shapes like clay, marketed recently as a children's toy.

6. The opposite of albino, where the object has too much pigmentation.

7. Arabic for a group of nomadic tribesmen.

8. The outer robe of a Roman Catholic priest, worn at Mass.

9. A flaxen, baby-leaf leg bug - Leptoglossus occidentalis.

10. A South American citrus fruit with a pink rind and sour flesh.

11. In geometry, the opposite of an asymptote.

Now, will the real albedo please stand up, fall down, or otherwise make itself known? Pick one!

I just gave to my favorite son, Fredo,
A plasticy toy called Albedo.
He then sculpted that brick
In the shape of a dick.
Wish his mother showed that much libido.

As I know the real def, I won't vote.

Better to vote for the daf that you think deserves your accolades for cleverness (and preferably without first telling people that it's wrong. Unless that statement is itself a ploy, meant to deceive...). After all, isn't the point of the game less about knowing/guessing the word and more about making up something plausible enough to convince the rest of us..?

I, also knowing the True Meaning of the word, will vote for 10, the citrus fruit with the misnamed skin. It was named by a Spanish explorer who was color-blind...and couldn't tell that the skin was not white but pink.

Looks like my limerick chose #5 for me.
March 08, 2010, 20:29

# 10 for me, please. I don't know the real meaning, and I always decide on the definitions before reading others' choices. Otherwise, I am swayed (particularly by arnie. Wink).

I'll take 9, then, and I don't know what it really means either!

If people who know the answer can't vote we'd have to permanently ban arnie.
I'll take 1 please.

A priest wouldn't wear a tuxedo
Or celebrate Mass in a speedo.
He's unlike the rest, meant
To dress in a vestment -
And that might be called an albedo.

No, not 8, ummm .... 11 thanks.

I, too, know the real definition so won't vote either.

So do I, so I won't vote.

Oh come on! Since when did we have a rule that you can't vote if you know the answer. That's just ridiculous. What if everyone knows the answer? Nobody votes? The whole point of a game like this is that some people may know the answer and some may not.

Agreed, Bob. We've always voted when we've known the word...that's when people guess the right definition. Just pick the correct definition; it's easy!
March 09, 2010, 21:32
wordmatic
Absolutely. No rule changes--voting is mandatory! Or we might have to place classified ads requesting that people of extremely limited vocabulary join us here. Wink

OK, I vote for #3! Oh, wait - I submitted the word. Confused

Well, anyway, It would be good if all did vote.

Well, vote already!

It's fine to win, people. Don't worry about those of us who don't know the word. We can take it.

This game definitely wins the Weirdest Bluffing Game Award! [WBGA]

Perhaps, Stella, if you were in charge? Once I've posted who wrote what, would you submit a word?

I suppose everyone who wants to has voted, so here's who wrote what:

1. A measure of reflectivity, from black to pure white.

One of the real definitions, as many of you knew. I first heard the term in relation to Jungian psychology, as being one of the steps in alchemy. Is that your obscure definition, z?

2. and 3 were mine.

4. A fragrant essential oil derived from the bark and leaves of the cedarwood tree.
Stella's aromatic offering.

5. An amorphous white substance for molding into shapes like clay, marketed recently as a children's toy.

Haberdasher offered this one.

6. The opposite of albino, where the object has too much pigmentation. and -
7. Arabic for a group of nomadic tribesmen.

Both Proofreader's.

8. The outer robe of a Roman Catholic priest, worn at Mass.

arnie's offering.

9. A flaxen, baby-leaf leg bug - Leptoglossus occidentalis.

Nancy bugged us with this.

10. A South American citrus fruit with a pink rind and sour flesh.

Wordmatic made us pucker with pink produce.

11. In geometry, the opposite of an asymptote.

Another of mine.

What a goofy game! Sheesh!!!

Ah, well, clearly people forgot how to play the game this time. Therefore, this isn't a good example. I wonder, frankly, if those who claimed to know the word really did. The only way we'd really know that would be if they selected the correct definition...and they didn't do that. Wink

Besides, Stella, you rock at the limerick game!

That you do! Uhhh, but is it igneous, metamorphic, or sedimentary? Confused

Anyway, Stella, could you please find a REALLY obscure word - one used only in NZ slang, for instance - and post it for the next game?

I knew it. But I also know how we play this game so I didn't post saying "I know it so I won't vote" - I just voted.

I asked above which two meanings you knew. Definition #1 and the alchemy one? Or do you know another?

I did know it;
Oh, of course I believed everyone who said they knew the word (didn't you see the Wink?). We're an honest bunch here. I was just confused that people didn't remember how to play. I believe we've been playing this game since 2002 (maybe 2003). When we first played, we actually kept score. You got one point for choosing the right definition and a point for each person who chose your daffynition. The gamekeeper won it all if no one guessed the right definition. However, it turned out to be too hard remembering scores from game to game, so we gave it up.

I agree with Geoff...Stella, we'd be so pleased if you would choose a word for the next game. And let's remind people that the point of the game is to win. That means, if you know the real definition, for heaven's sake, select it. If you don't, choose the one you think it might be.

Definition #1 and the alchemy one?

Yes. Since the game is over, I shall give you the alchemical definition, which I learned first: "one of the stages of the alchemical work,". Besides albedo 'whiteness' two of the other stages are nigredo 'blackness' and rubedo 'redness'. CG Jung developed a whole psychological interpretation of the alchemical work, i.e., the search for the Philosopher's Stone. I never really did believe in alchemy, but I found it a fascinating subject when I was in high school and university.

Yeah, Proof, and he was a friend of the famous Chicago mobster who killed Lee Harvey Oswald, Jacob Rubedo, who changed his name to Jack Ruby.
