Limerick Game: Kabul Poll
Sorry for the delay. Had to attend to a matter of some urgency.

Usual voting scenario.1. If you’re seeking a tart in Kabul
There’s a gymnastic gal, name o’ Jewel--
What a miracle-worker
Inside o’ that burkha!--
‘ Round the world, all the while looking cool

2. Vacationing up in Kabul?
For drone strikes and land mines, it's cool.
Snug caves I have word of,
But one thing's unheard-of:
A four-star hotel with a pool.

3. A farmer one night in Kabul
Went out in the hills on the pull
But he started to weep
When he found only sheep
For he always found goats were less dull.

4. A suicide bomber from Hull
Trained for his trade in Kabul
Filled his vest with C5
But still hoped to survive
(His wits were remarkably dull)

5. Batman fought with his foe Ra's al Ghul
On a mountain top outside Kabul
Then slept with his daughter
Fathered Damien (sorta)
For Batman, who said life was dull.

(Notes to accompany the last one. For those who don't know, Ras al Ghul is one of Batman's major foes. Batman fathered a son, Damien Wayne, with Ras al Ghul's daughter, Talia, though this story has and hasn't been canon at various times - hence the "sorta")

6. In Afghanistan's capital Kabul;
I know an incredible yahoo.
He'll not let me drive
Or party and jive.
As a Shah, he's exceedingly blah, too.

7. The dong on a stud from Kabul
Was immense and as straight as a rule.
When he stood at attention
Bystanders would mention
He looked like a three-legged stool.OneTwoThreeFourFiveSixSeven

A tie so far. These were better than I would have imagined.

If no further votes, I guess I make the final decision on the winner.

I have a dilemma.

I simply can't make ANY of them me except my own and I won't vote for myself. So I'll have to abstain.

Bob, just select the closest one to your liking. Believe me, that has happened to me many times.

that should have been "make any of them rhyme"

That should have been "can't make any of them rhyme", I'll vote anyway

But later - site doesn't seem to be working properly tight now...

Vote for the funniest one, if none of them rhyme (my philosophy anyway). I hear you...the site often misspells my words or leaves some out; I hate it when that happens. Wink

Thanks, Proof, for a good game. You're up, Bethree!

Bob, I'd be very interested in how you pronounce Kabul. To me, "pull" and "dull" don't even rhyme, for example.

I used this site for the pronunciation. Given that pronunciation, there is no word that perfectly rhymes with it. The "l" is not completely articulated, as in either "pull" or "dull." Yet, my "too" and "yahoo" weren't perfect either because Kabul has a hint of an "l" sound - just not the whole "l." Further, the stress is on the first syllable in that site's pronunciation, which is why I chose YA-hoo and BLAH-too. Still my rhymes are far from perfect (just explaining my choices), and , while I tried maintain the culture (women don't drive, Shahs), it wasn't that funny. So I understand no votes, I guess.

Depending on the site, I've heard many variations on news programs in the pron even among those in-country, in the city. KAH-bel, Kah-BUHL, Ka-BULL, Kah_BOOL, among them. So it's up to the witer to determine which rhyme they feel best represents the word.

What's a guy to do? We have a river in SW Co. called the "Florida" river and most people down there pronounce it "Floor-EE-da", not to mention a town called Louisville pronounced "lewis-ville". When I see a poem, and see a town name that I pronounce differently, I generally change my pronunciation to match the rhyming words in the poem.

We have a hard enough time with all of the other elements of the limerick requirements to not bend a little on whether it has more than one ways it might rhyme depending on the author's local jargon.

Just my opinion, guys. I think I may have said this once before. Just remember it's just a game and no one is winning big bucks for their winning poem. (Or I don't think they are.....but I've never even gotten a vote, so maybe there's some unspoken rewards I don't know about). Smile

Totally agree, Tom, and that's why I always marvel how people here (or on OEDILF) take the "perfect" rhyming idea so seriously. Even if you, Bob and arnie, stress the second syllable (I have heard it both ways), I think you have to admit the "l" isn't similar to that in "pull." It's just one of those words that has no perfect rhyme.

I probably take the meter situation too seriously. The same goes, too, for syllable stresses because different accents create different stresses.

Gee thanks, guyz... Razz

Sorry for delay. I too have been out of town back & forth-- sheesh! Perhaps I need to post something at community. Had I been on hand to vote I would have selected yours, Proof (very funny!), so at least you got a chance to pass the baton.
Meanwhile I have been counting sheep er I mean composing limericks for my next fave location. Coming soon to this forum.

Because there was no notification in the original Kabul thread that the Poll was set, I've only just seen this, and realised of course that there is a new game afoot. I only realised because Proof posted to the dis-game, so I realised he was back on deck and figured that he had maybe posted the Kabul poll. Hopefully I am not too late for Honolulu.
