Bluffing Word - TEITHI
I think it's time to play this great game again! I have a great word to share, too, so send along your creative definitions by PM and I'll post them all when I get a good group.

Well hot dog! (It has been so long since I've heard that phrase. Wink). I am so glad you've revived this game because I have missed it.

I so want my daffynition to be "baby talk for teeth," but it would hardly fool anyone! Mine's on the way, CW, via PM. And thanks!

I only have 4 suggested definitions - Kalleh, Hab, Tin and Arnie. Doesn't anyone else want to come out and play?

Hmm - which one do you think?

TEITHI

A. A long boat of aboriginal northern New Zealand, propelled by four oarsmen.

B. Breeding stallion, particularly one who can cover 2 mares in quick succession.

C. A Javanese single-stringed musical instrument.

D. Inca God of the Underworld.

E. In Mayan culture, a teenage right of passage.

F. A Japanese-style lounge chair that expresses the Zen ideals of simplicity and style. Because it is comfortable and low to the ground, it is supposed to provide for contemplation and relaxation.

G. A type of atoll in the Pacific Ocean.

H. A piece of rope or leather used to hold a helmet or hat box on a pack or trunk when travelling.

Every single one of those sounds like a bluff to me.

You have me stumped, as well.

At random, I've chosen H.

I'll choose C.

I'll take D, dammitall.

(though I had been thinking of choosing B just to be perverse...)

I will try G, only because it sounds the least weird. Wink

Asa hasn't yet voted . . . I'll give it one or two more days and then post the answers. :-)

I know - it's very old and obscure . . . I got it from _A Dictionary of Medieval Terms and Phrases_ by Christopher Coredon with Ann Williams, which was sitting on the end table at my in-laws when we arrived for New Year's Eve. After trying for 20 minutes to convince Dad to join the board (he is funny about thinking he can't navigate something like this), I just gave up and read his books anyway. :-)

Well done, CW! Big Grin

You're the first person in a very long time, I think, to fool everybody. I have a vague recollection of it happening several years ago when this game was just starting out, but I don't remember it happening recently.

Now someone will irately point out the word with which they fooled everyone recently, I suppose...

And quite childishly, I desire to point out that I not only fooled you, Arnie, with a word you didn't guess, but that you ALSO guessed my fake definition! Ha! Yay!

Did that dictionary give an etymology of teithi? A search of the web reveals that a mytholocical son of Gwynham is named Teithi. The only things I can find about Gwynham are that he was the father of Teithi and he was Welsh.

Your Dad having such a dictionary and your interest in Medeival reenactment seems more than coincidental. Perhaps your Dad is a professor or researcher of Medeival times?

By the way, Asa was going to guess B, but never got around to it. He was preoccupied.

Good one, CW! I know that I have never fooled everyone here. I have to say that I am a teensy jealous. Wink

Actually, it was checked out from the library by my father-in-law . . . and he is a retired banker.

Also, the reenacting that I do is Early American, not Medeival. I just picked up the book because it was words, and YES, I was TRYING to fool you! There was no etymology, though, mores the pity.

Don't be jealous, Kalleh - it's just a fluke! Although I do have a couple more words that sounded interesting that I copied down . . . but I'm going to dole those out slowly. Wink

Right! Everyone remember that for the next few words contributed by CW! If a definition has a medieval ring to it, it's likely to be the right one. Big Grin
