En-Titled Ishmael
Since nobody's jumping in with another book, I'll do it again. Some of you may have read this one, so it may be too easy, but I'll do it anyhow! PM me with first lines.

I seem to have jumped over Kalleh, so will withdraw this thread.

Oh - I thought we were going to do both books simultaneously.

Well, I don't care...whatever. I only have CW's response anyway. I will delete my thread and you can do it again, Asa.

No, you go ahead, Kalleh. I've already had a turn. I hopped in when it seemed that nobody else was going to. However, I can't delete this thread. I got a message saying that threads can't be deleted if they have replies. Confused

Asa, go ahead. I have already deleted my thread. I suspect I am able to because I have Administrator capabilities.

It's okay. I will do one another time.

I've got five. I'll make up a couple if I don't hear from anyone else by the 26th.

First lines for Ishmael:

1. Herodotus said, "In peace, sons bury their fathers, in war, fathers bury their sons."

2. We spoke of covenants and reconciliation that day, and about the soul’s assumption of its ‎rightful import as the true master of a life.

3. Walking into a room where a five hundred twelve pound colossus of a gorilla is sleeping is not my idea of a fun way to start my day.

4. I have sat now for more than half the morning watching a terrapin struggling to climb the shore only to be dragged back by each sucking wave.

5. Cognitive scientists point out that anthropocentrism is a dominant mythology.

6. The first time I read the ad, I choked and cursed and spat and threw the paper to the floor.

7. He was lost.

8. Payback is a bitch, I am told; but revenge is sweet whether hot or cold, and I wanted revenge in the worst kind of way.

9. All too often I have seen pity led astray.

Cast your ostrakons for the ones you don't think true! Or, vote for the one you think IS it! The choice is up to you.

The real first line:

quote:
1. Herodotus said, "In peace, sons bury their fathers, in war, fathers bury their sons."

Herodotus said it, but Daniel Quinn, who wrote Ishmael, didn't quote it.

2. We spoke of covenants and reconciliation that day, and about the soul’s assumption of its ‎rightful import as the true master of a life.

Saranita seduced Kalleh with this line.

3. Walking into a room where a five hundred twelve pound colossus of a gorilla is sleeping is not my idea of a fun way to start my day.

I tossed this one in just to make Jo go ape.

4. I have sat now for more than half the morning watching a terrapin struggling to climb the shore only to be dragged back by each sucking wave.

Caterwauller was compelled to select Bob Hale's contribution.

5. Cognitive scientists point out that anthropocentrism is a dominant mythology.

Nobody, alas, picked Kalleh's scientific approach.

6. The first time I read the ad, I choked and cursed and spat and threw the paper to the floor.

Saranita must have read the book, 'cuz she got it right.

7. He was lost.

Cat got herself lost writing this one.

8. Payback is a bitch, I am told; but revenge is sweet whether hot or cold, and I wanted revenge in the worst kind of way.

Jo's revenge was for naught this time.

9. All too often I have seen pity led astray.

The opening line of St-Exupery's [The Wisdom of The Sands], his last published work, seduced Bob.

Did not.

That would be cheating.
May 02, 2006, 07:57
Kalleh
It would be cheating to go and look at the first line just for this thread. However, if one has read the book, one could very easily remember how the book started. Surely that's not cheating.

Unfortunately, reading the book years ago did not assist me, other than remembering that Ishmael was an ape. Sigh...

If I did either of those, I'd feel like I was fudging, which is why I prefer the titles for this game be neither classics nor bestsellers. But, hey, what do I know? Maybe it's less a game about writing than it is a game that favors contestants who are very well-read (and have great memories!) I chose #6 because I like the connection between Old Testament Ishmael and "choked and cursed and spat," which has rather an Old Testament quality to it. I thought the author clever to begin the book that way.

Having previously read the book is no different from having previously learned the word in the Bluffing Game! Good job, Saranita, however you did it! Smile Your reasoning was right on target and I agree!

I threw in the quote by St-Exupery because it had somewhat the same quality, I thought. Kinda like from Ecclesiastes. Can't you see King David lamenting in just that way?

Caterwauller
Good round of the game! Thanks, Asa! Now, I believe Kalleh has a book to do?
