Bluffing Game: Groak
Our next Bluffing game word is pretty simple: groak.

Please PM me with your daffynitions!

Ooops! It's Monday, and I almost forgot. Here are the daffies, and one real definition. Start guessing...though, arnie, please wait a little bit. Wink

1. To pretend you are dead; play dead.

2. An obsolete Scottish land measurement, roughly equivalent to a quarter of an acre.

3. To stare at someone who is eating in hopes of getting food.

4. A type of leg band used by ornithologists to tag birds they are studying.

5. A Scandinavian troll who spreads winter wherever she goes.

6. A treatment for colds and flu used in central African countries consisting of hot milk and chili.

7. The messy product of mixing foot sweat and sock lint.

8. An implement used to scrape unwanted fat and other detritus from the skin of an animal prior to tanning.

9. A bitter old woman.

10. To choke or vomit.

Now, these are fun! How could you possibly not be tempted to pick one of these? Get going!

wordmatic
I'll pick 8, please.

It's a bitter old woman who's choking on vomit after scraping the hide of a Scanadanavian troll with sweaty feet.

Heck, I dunno... 3, maybe? I'm hungry, so that informs my guess.

“Ah, laddie,” the surveyor spoke,
“The measure of grass round that oak
Is well known to us Scots
From oldsters to tots
As a unit of length called a groak.”

Based on what the Scottish surveyor said, I have to go with #2. Although I've heard most Scottish surveyors are liars.

They must have surveyed Southeast Portland, then! Nearly half the streets don't align at intersections.

#2 for me too thanks, Kalleh - it sounds quite Scottish.

I'll go for 3.

I guess that's it. As usual, our winners are Geoff and arnie...though since 2 people also guessed arnie's daffy, I suppose he's the big winner. Congrats! Big Grin

Here are the results:

1. To pretend you are dead; play dead. - Yours truly's...guessed by no one.

2. An obsolete Scottish land measurement, roughly equivalent to a quarter of an acre. - arnie's....guessed by proofreader & Stella

3. To stare at someone who is eating in hopes of getting food. - the real thing (Grandiloquent Dictionary)...guessed by arnie and Geoff

4. A type of leg band used by ornithologists to tag birds they are studying. - Wordmatic's...guessed by Bob

5. A Scandinavian troll who spreads winter wherever she goes. - goofy's...guessed by no one

6. A treatment for colds and flu used in central African countries consisting of hot milk and chili. - Bob's...guessed by no one (perhaps I should have left the original spelling in, Bob. Wink)

7. The messy product of mixing foot sweat and sock lint. - Geoff's...guessed by no one (and I don't know why not; it's pretty creative!)

8. An implement used to scrape unwanted fat and other detritus from the skin of an animal prior to tanning. - proofreader's; guessed by Wordmatic

9. A bitter old woman. - Stella's...guessed by no one

10. To choke or vomit. - Stella's...guessed by no one

I learned something, besides the definition of groak, in this thread. Bob tells me that they spell "chile" either that way or with 2 "l"s. Interesting!

Are you through with your entree? You poke
At your half-eaten T-bone. I groak
In the hope that you’ll offer
That meat as a proffer
But you are much too selfish. So croak!

Pity. Frown I thought mine was quite good. It was a remedy really suggested by one of my students when we discussed health. It just didn't have that name.

I've seen it (the food that is. not the country)here as "chili" and chilli but not chile.
Searching Google UK you get approximately 1.2m ghits with either spelling

Just a typo, Bob. No more.

Speaking of Chile...8.8 is very big! In some ways (clearly not all!) they were very lucky. Over 200,000 died in Haiti with a lesser sized earthquake. But I digress...
