I am tempted by h, but I will take e.

My vote is for "I." Does that ring a bell?

(When Dick Cheney was appointed to "chair" a committee for the selection of a candidate for Vice President, he voted for "I.")

D and E sound like the definitions most likely to be correct while B is the one that strikes me as most bogus. My strategy in the past has been to vote for the definition I thought had the best chance of being correct and I haven't nailed this thing once so a change is in order. This time I'll opt for B.

Oh, and jheem? "Here's the definitions" is grammatically incorrect. It should be either the lesser heard (and even more infrequently written) "Here're the definitions" or, better yet, "Here's the list of definitions." And, as a sidenote, I considered suggesting the addition of a half point to my overall score for being so pleasantly helpful but I won't - I'd never hear the end of Kalleh's whining if you gave it to me!

(My goodness, I get to verbally joust with jheem twice in the same day! I can actually feel my head swell!)

Oh damn. I just hate this. I'm going with CJ for definition B.
For pretty much the same reason too.

I pick h. I almost picked a, since that sounds like the most logical meaning, and I considered b, since it sounded like something that might go with spotted dick or toad-in-the-hole. But I'll stick with h.

"C" speaks most loudly to me, but I note, nay, I chime in with the observation that two answers are awfully similar. Are there two correct answers, or did two evil minds think along the same devious paths?
March 16, 2004, 22:50
arnie
Well, there is a saying that great minds think alike...

I'll go for c. as well.

Sorry to disagree with you C J, but you're wrong. In in my ideolect "Here's the definitions" is perfectly grammatical. Followed by "Here be definitions" And distantly by "Here is a definition and eight of its cousins."

Oh, and the superlative of bogus is bogust. And stop waving those verbs at me. Everybody knows one jousts with adjectives. Tinny, spikey adjectives. Wink

OK, I've heard from all the members who sent me answers in private. When should I post the results? And I'll need help scoring it properly. (I can post the results at the earliest this evening.)
March 18, 2004, 07:28
<Asa Lovejoy>
How early is the earliest this evening, or how early does evening start in California, where nothing is as it seems?

Asa in what used to be Oregon, but which is now Alta California

Jheem,

Go ahead and post the results!

The first message in this earlier thread gives the points scoring system.

Evening has yet to come, but I've got a minute before going into commuter traffic. Here we go:

who: choice (whose definition)
Kalleh: e (CJ's definition)
jerry thomas: i (Asa's definition)
C J Strolin: b (shufitz' definition)
BobHale: b (shufitz' definition)
tinman: h (arnie's definition)
Asa Lovejoy: c (kalleh's definition)
arnie: c (kalleh's definition)
Winterbranch: i (Asa's definition)
shuffitz: g (correct)

So,

shufitz 4
Asa 2
Kalleh 2
arnie 1
CJ 1

Is that right?

Hold on!

KHC emailed me with word that she still is unable to come up to post. She can read our words of semi-wisdom and hemi-demi-wit but can't yet seem to add to the mix herself.

She requests to be put down for an "H" vote, "H" as in "Hope this gets in under the wire." I might add that "H" is not my entry although I did offer to make a choice for her thereby upping my own overall total by a point. (Whadda guy!)

Also a couple of suggestions: Since we have not only two but two pair of definitions that are extremely similar, might they be combined somehow when points are doled out? And since there were roughly two dozen to pick from, should fooling us all still be worth three points?

Not to quibble but...

Drat that Shufitz! Mad

I should have known that 2 similar definitions (e and h) are usually not correct.

TrossL, we posted at the same time, but I am editing this to say...Welcome back! Please stay with us this time! Cool

Okay, who's the next wordmaster?

I think it should be CJ.

Don't know why everyone seems to want to bestow ThreadMasterhood upon me - I've had a turn already while others haven't. I nominate TrossL as a way of getting her to stick around.

Also, to address a question I brought up earlier (which no one responded to - maybe you thought I wasn't serious) concerning duplication of answers. In this round, answers "A" and "I" were close enough to be equals as were answers "E" and "H." Might the author of answer "A" then be justified in coveting the points earned by the author of answer "I" and vice versa and, likewise, with answers "E" and "H"?

The fact that this would favorably effect my score is in no way a reason I am bringing this up. Anything that gets me past Kalleh again is justifiable. And how about 2 points off Arnie's score for looking too much like Winston Churchill?

(Plus: Ha-Ha, Kalleh! Fooled you again!!)
March 18, 2004, 21:18
Kalleh
CJ, the only thing that keeps me from being furious with you for fooling me is that....I am ahead of you! Razz

Total points:

arnie - 29
Kalleh - 14
CJ - 12 1/2
Asa - 13
Bob - 9
KHC - 7
WinterBranch - 4
Shufitz - 4
wordnerd - 3
haberdasher - 1
Jerry - 1

Now, those with lower scores have only played a few times. I agree with CJ....TrossL, how about being our WordMistress? Please???? We have missed you soooo much! Your limericks and DDs are the best! Big Grin

Asa, I agree. I was gleeful that arnie chose my selection in this game! Wink

Since Tross must not be around, arnie, I nominate you for the next round. After all, you're the big leader here, and you haven't done it for awhile. Pretty please?

Kalleh,
It's somebody's fault... we just can't find "somebody"..

And I owe CJ one for talking about my Quickies being "unsatisfying"... he'll pay!

Here are the definitions for yirn:

1. A short, improvisational poem in Uighur that is declaimed upon meeting a person outside the poet's clan.

2. A decorative strap on a horse's bridle, particularly used in dressage events.

3. The wooden peg holding a pilaster to a beam in formal Scottish houses.

4. In Scotland, it refers to a small forest or a thicket of trees near a lake, pond or river.

5. A piercing sound such as produced by the high notes of a bagpipe.

6. To whine; to pout or show petulance.

7. The thread resulting from spinning steel wool, used in the manufacture of cables.

8. A nonce word meaning "Military." Coined by WWII cartoonist Bill Mauldin and used extensively by Ernie Pyle, it sprang from "Up Front" characters Willie and Joe advising each other "Yirn trouble" for one military infraction or another.

Guess away!

I'll go with #4.

I like the sound of another definition better but I'll go with #4 anyway.

A P.S.: Having voted, I went to Dictionary.com for illumination seeing as how I may be away from the computer for a few days and was pleased to see that "yirn" wasn't listed. I say "pleased" since this will make my first correct guess in this thread (should I be so lucky) that much sweeter. Plus I'm betting that the easily-fooled Kalleh chooses my entry again!

I assume "yirn" is in the OED along with bushels of other old, outdated, useless, bothersome, and otherwise near-worthless words. (I'm only up to "D" in my rewrite - it's slow going!)

I have no idea. I did so want to choose CJ's selection (4) so that I'd be certain not to choose his definition. However, I just don't think a dictionary would put a comma after "In Scotland."

So, I am forced to go with 6, and I will "yirn" if it is CJ's definition! Wink
