Bluffing Game: Décalage
Yes, it's a French word, but it has an English application. Its most common meaning in French is "jet lag." Send me your Daffynition of its English meaning.

Welcome, Myth! We hope to see more of you.

You do know how to play? Just send a PM to Asa with a daffy definition. Make it fun! To send PMs, just click Go, Personal Zone, and then Private Messaging.

BTW, I sent you one, Asa.

Very good of you! Welcome to the madhouse! Big Grin

Here are the daffynitions, plus the real one. Pick the real one if you know it!

1. A raised pattern on fabric or garment.

2. The stragglers in a foot race or political contest.

3. A military word meaning that the best range and best endurance both occur at specific angles of attack, regardless of weight.

4. An engineering term meaning the difference in angle, relative to a datum line, between two surfaces.

5. The struts holding together the wings of a biplane.

6. The Ten Commandments.

7. Lingering at the table at the end of a meal.

8. A chart showing degradation in ten year increments of petroglyphs and similar archeoloogical art works.

Some serious baloney here, along with the real definition! Which is real? Answer in this open forum, not by PM!

One appeals to me. Three appeals to me. But five appeals to me the most.

I'll choose Brubeck.

2, please.

I'm gonna go FOUR it. #4 that is...

Though I agree with Hab that #5 looks tempting.

Myth Jellies
It was between three and four for me. I went with three.

I forgot to do one but I'll guess anyway. I'll try 1.

I'll take four, please.

Well, if Jo and Arnie chose 4, that must be it, because they're never wrong; but just to spread the wealth around, I'll go with #8.

I'm choosing #4, please.

It's probably 4, but I like 5 . . . but I most like to engage in 7, so I'm going with that one.

I had hoped to give it a bit more time for answers, but my computer's giving me problems, sooooo, here are the answers:

1. A raised pattern on fabric or garment.
Submitted by Myth Jellies, unstitching Bob Hale

2. The stragglers in a foot race or political contest.
Wordmatic's offering, which nobody believed. Frown

3. A military word meaning that the best range and best endurance both occur at specific angles of attack, regardless of weight.
Kalleh targeted Myth Jellies with this military malarkey.

4. An engineering term meaning the difference in angle, relative to a datum line, between two surfaces.
Since Jo and arnie got it right, you know it's the right answer. Something tells me I used this term previously - did I? Confused

5. The struts holding together the wings of a biplane.
Arnie flew off with Haberdasher's vote.

6. The Ten Commandments.
Haberdasher didn't make like Moses in this instance, fooling nobody.

7. Lingering at the table at the end of a meal.
A very logical proposition by Caterwauller, who voted for her own answer! Roll Eyes

8. A chart showing degradation in ten year increments of petroglyphs and similar archeoloogical art works.
Jo took inWordmatic with her petroglyphic poppycock.

Now, who's got a word that Jo and arnie DON'T know? Wink

Ah, but Asa, somebody did vote for #2--Kalleh! Thanks, Kalleh!

I thought #4 was too close to Asa's original comment. Darn!

Yes, wordmatic, I did select yours. I had such a convoluted (and I had thought excellent) reason, too!
January 09, 2007, 22:18
jo
whoever wrote #5 (arnie?) had me going for a while, since decalage is a term used on RC airplane clubs -- we belong to one -- regarding the angle on the wings in relation to the body, as well as tail rudder angle. However, I finally settled on #4 since I knew it had more to do with angles than wings.

arnie
That's right, jo. I also thought that Asa's fairly well-known interest in planes, together with the similarity of the word to fuselage, would combine to make a good daffynition.

Your reason was excellent, because that is what the word should mean! (I was playing off repechage in mine.)

Yup. I bit on the "fuselage" angle, too...

And I thought I would catch someone with mine because the Ten Commandments are also called the Decalogue. Turned out to be just idol speculation, I guess.

Asa,
I voted correctly, also! Didn't I? All my research on Orville and Wilbur! Smile

I am rather pathetic, aren't I? (laughing a lot here)

I wish I could claim it was an attempt to garner more support for my definition, but no, it was just me, being silly.
