LIMERICK GAME: BRUSSELS
Next limerick location is BRUSSELS.

By my reckoning, it has only 6 true rhymes -- & one of those is obsolete English -- but all sound kinda funny to me.

Furthermore, Brussels has about a dozen "slant rhymes"* -- so I am planning to double my fun w/supplementary offerings which are technically invalid! Join me if you wish.

------
*"Slant rhyme -- sometimes called half rhyme, imperfect rhyme, near-rhyme, or lazy rhyme -- is a type of rhyme formed by words with similar but not identical sounds. Strictest interpretation (but play around with it): either the vowel segments are different while the consonants are identical, or vice versa. For added tightness: where varying the vowels, keep them both short vowels, or both long vowels.

Examples: loving/ living; moan/ mine... glitter/ glimmer; butterfly/ flutter by

Not sure that I will be able to find the time to enter this one. But back in 1983 when we Aussies broke America's 132 year stranglehold on the Americas' Cup (sailing event), an Aussie band called Men at Work had a smash hit with a song called "Down Under", with the lyrics:

Buying bread from a man in Brussels,
Six foot tall and full of muscles,
I said do ya speaka my language,
He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich!

What's keeping you so busy, or should I not ask?

Hi Geoff,

In short work. From 2012-late 2017 I had a part time 20 hours a week IT job. I still have that job but I cut it back to 2 days a week, so I could take on another part-time job where I am paid to do about 30 hours a week, but in which I actually do about 60 hours. It's a labour of love where I teach young kids Coding, and I spend a lot of time doing very through prep. From 2009-2012 I was unemployed because age discrimination, although illegal in Australia, is rife in the IT industry. It sent me broke. At 64 my new very busy life can be tough at times but it sure beats being broke.

PS: But I did enter a limerick.

Regards Greg

Turnarounds make me dizzy, making me prone to become supine.

PS: edited mine too.

I don't understand double-dactylic lines at all!

A dactyl is a three-syllable word or phrase with the stress on the first one. "Syllable," for example, is a dactyl. A double-dactyl has two consecutive dactyls, and the paradigm is "Higgledy-piggledy," which was the initial nonsense line when the poetic form Double-Dactyl was invented in the Fifties. You'll find a bunch of examples in The Written Word, the second forum on our "Forums" page.

Probably only a few of you remember Jerry from here. He was here almost from the beginning and lived in Hawaii. Jerry loved double dactyls.
Unfortunately, he died a few years ago.

Anyway, I visited him in Hawaii, and he had a small party while I was there. He was introducing me to some of his friends and one of them was named something like "Catherine Anderson." He turned to me as he introduced her and whispered in my ear, "Note she has a double dactyl name." I still remember the glee on his face when he said that.

Just a little diversion from business - now, back to business! Bethree, I'll get one to you tomorrow? I hope it's not too late.

Since "dactyl" derives from the Greek word, Daktylos meaning finger breath, a double dactyl is two fingers. That's a unit of measure used with whiskey shots. Therefore a single dactyl is when you give a bartender the finger. Roll Eyes

PS: Hoooraaay! I can finally see Haberdasher's posts again! What changed???

Looking forward to yours, Kalleh. Come one, come all. So far, have received 6 limericks from 4 contributors.

I have written a ridiculous number of Brussels limericks, & promise to cull the grossest & most pathetic in direct proportion to the total number I receive Big Grin

Holy Cow!
We've got 15.
And only one with "slant rhymes". That was mine, so I'm automatically disqualifying it by publishing it here:

I just heard some rustles in Brussels
Suggestive of hassles in castles.
The Queen’s making missiles
Of kitchenware pestles
When beckoned for nightly king-nuzzles.

There problem solved, only 14 to choose among Wink

Will put on poll late this afternoon.

I think I may have slid in under the deadline! Sorry to be so late. Nobody will probably vote for it, but I like it. Razz

I'll go with Little Old Lady, which I am. Smile

Let's amend that to Round Little Old Lady.

Permit me to offer an amendment:

I just heard some rustles in Brussels
Suggestive of hassles in castles.
The Queen’s throwing missiles
And catcalling whistles
When beckoned for nightly king-nuzzles.

Is everything okay?

Surprise! Getting it posted early.
We seem to have agreed to ditch the poll format as it's so hard to read results... So I'm counting on you folks to help me count the votes correctly as they trickle in Wink
