dehort
I was perusing a word book in a local book store this weekend, and the author was lamenting that we don't use the word dehort anymore. It means "to urge to refrain or dissuade," or the opposite of exhort. The author wrote that it was a useful word that we no longer use. He credited AWAD for citing it (in July of 2007). I searched our site and found that Wordcrafter had written about it in July of 2003 here.

Have any of you seen it used? If not, what word would you use instead?

I haven't seen the word used. "Dissuade" seems to convey the concept adequately to me.

I suppose, though there seems to be more urging involved with dehort. [I see Word doesn't recognize it as it gets the squiggly red underline.]

On the other hand, as I've learned here on WC, every single concept doesn't need one word, though it would be nice if it were the case Wink.
