KallehWomen are from venus and...
Men are from mars.
Conversation as we were getting ready for work:
Me: Do I look fat in this jacket?
Shu: Not fat. Pleasingly plump, maybe.
Me: I am throwing it out then!
Shu: Well not plump, really. More square-ish.
And out that jacket goes!

GeoffYou know darned well that's a trap question. No matter what his reply, he's gonna sleep on the couch.

December 23, 2017, 08:01
KallehNo. I do trust his fashion judgment. Had he just said “yes,” I’d have said, “Me too,” and would have dumped it. But pleasingly plump? And then denying it and thinking “square-ish” is better?
Ah well. I mostly laughed and he did not sleep on the couch. I just think it goes to show the differences.

<Proofreader>My wife's friend called and asked, "Is Brenda around?"
"No,: I said. "She's more oblong."

Kalleh
BTW, Shu says he said, "chunky" and not "pleasingly plump." I think that's worse, but he thinks it's better.
December 24, 2017, 06:16
<Proofreader>Which is better: chunky or pleasingly plump peanut butter?
December 24, 2017, 14:43
GeoffHow about, "famine-ready?"
December 28, 2017, 21:33
KallehIt's one of those perceptions, but to me "chunky" sounds more masculine, like "square-ish," while at least pleasingly plump sounds a little feminine.

GeoffA century ago "pleasingly plump" was not a euphamism. Maybe its time has come again?

How about "easy to see"?

KallehWhich do you think is worse, pleasingly plump or chunky? What are other euphemisms for fat? I think there are a lot.

BobHaleOver here the conversation can be rather more direct. I have often had children come to me and ask "Why are you so fat?".
"No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.

Perhaps you are emulating the Buddha?

Go to a Walmart. No one will notice you.

KallehSo, Bob, what do you say? I'll keep that response in abeyance for when my sweet husband tells me I look "square-ish" again. Actually, that was my least favorite of the descriptions because it reminds me of a Sumo wrestler or something.

He does at that! However, if you want a more honest assessment you could say, "It isn't the most becoming outfit that you have." That's a little more tactful. The squarish comment makes me think of football players and shoulder pads.

The historical Buddha wasn't fat. In fact, at one point he practiced asceticism. You are thinking of "the laughing Buddha" who actually was a monk.
