A headline in my local newspaper yesterday

That would be an interesting trick! You know how I love lousy headlines. Here is one from today's local news:

"Orchard Park is man hit with felony DWI charge"

Where are the editors?

Police Murder Suspect In Dock

Hmmm...

Guardian: CND Ducks Vote On Bomb
Apocryphal: Montgomery Flies Back To Front

Not headlines, but I saw all these in TV interviews:

Supermarket spokesman: "We don't have much butter, but what we do have we're spreading about between stores."

Bank spokesman: "Too many young couples are being saddled with a millstone round their neck."

Politician: "Each week there seems to be three or four hot potatoes coming over the horizon."

A few minutes ago I heard the following statement in an item on the Newsnight program.

"Carnegie moved to America and ruthlessly became the world's richest man."

This doesn't sound quite right to me. It sounds as if they mean that the act of becoming the world's richest man was ruthless rather than (as I suspect they meant) his ruthlessness enabled him to become the world's richest man.

I realise I'm being very picky here but hey, that's what I'm best at !

Loved it ! I'm going to start scouring the papers for more examples. Maybe we could make a competition of it for who can find the best example of a dangling modifier in the press.
