I thought I was joking when I said "The Omega variant" had a terribly apocalyptic sound to it. Not there yet but getting closer with every new name. The Omicron Variant does sound awfully like a science fiction novel of the end of the world. Why can't they give them less doom-laden names? If the bookies are taking bets on when this all ends I’d like a small wager on April 2057 just in time for my hundredth birthday.

They have just skipped over two and for pretty obvious reasons. Nu sounds too much like new and as for Xi - it would be seen as a deliberate insult to China. So just nine variants to go to the end of the world.
