When did this variation occur, and why? There's no infinitive version of this as there is in "to bed"--going to bed AND going to bed some plantings.

Ah, yes, we talk about US/UK differences a lot here, and this is one of them. I am not sure, though, when and how it started. Does anyone? I don't even know where to start looking.
