Pretty
I always use the word "pretty" to mean how someone or something looks - pleasing or cute. Yesterday, I was reading an article where an English teacher had asked her class to write a letter to nursing home residents to brighten their lives during this blasted pandemic. She said that some of the students wrote "pretty" letters. She actually used the word twice - she then talked about a student who wrote the "prettiest."

It made me look up the word. One of the definitions in dictionary.com was "pleasing to the mind or aesthetic taste, as in "He writes pretty little stories."

Would you use it that way?

BTW, one student (these were high school students) added at the end: "I hope you're still around after this pandemic." Wink

My favorite use of that word:

"I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog, too!

To answer your question, no, I wouldn't use "pretty" that way. It sounds very British to me.

Yes - Wizard of Oz!

And of course there is that "pretty good" definition as well.
