GeoffOdd redundancy
In the fipple (mouthpiece) of flutes and recorders, the transverse cutout in the instrument's body is called the
labium lip. Say
WHAT??? Where'd that goofy term come from? It's also called a
windsplitter. Which term leaves me wondering if I could play a recorder by passing gas, thereby simultaneously breaking and splitting wind?

haberdasherEven so. The language is replete with redundancies. Consider the ATM Machine, or UPC Code, or SCUBA apparatus, for example. I suspect you could find better ones...

KallehLabium lip is rather odd, though I suppose Hab is right. Fipple would have been a great bluffing game word.
