Not sarcasm; not irony ...
What would you call the literary device being used in this witty description I came across while reading Tom Jones? Somehow 'sarcasm' and 'irony' don't seem appropriate, yet it's definitely a case of meaning something very different from what the words literally say.

I say it's irony of the highest order. What makes you think otherwise?

Build a man a fire and he's warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.

Arnie, I told Shu that it was the British form of "irony." Remember, we differ on that definition.

Henry Fielding was a master of irony, and Tom Jones contains some of the finest examples of irony in the English language.

Build a man a fire and he's warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.
