We've mentioned the Apostrophe Protection Society (APS) here before. The site has long had a message board of sorts and I know that both Bob and Richard came here from there when it suffered an attack of trolls. I, too, found this site from a link on their board.

John Richards, the founder (and sole member) of the society has had an epiphany and decreed that the board shall in future be only used for the discussion of apostrophes. Paul Doherty (a poster here in the past as pauld) has set up a new board, Not-the-APS Message Board and most of the regular posters on the APS board have decamped thereto.

Check it out! It's early days yet, but there's some good stuff there already.

The purpose of this special post is to provide the correct
date of birth ...
Asa Lawrence Lovejoy was born in Groton, Massachusetts, on March 14, 1808. He attended both Cambridge and Amherst colleges. He studied law and was admitted to the bar.

Lovejoy came to Oregon in 1843 where he practiced law in Oregon City. He had a land claim along the Willamette River, and in 1845, with Francis W. Pettygrove, laid out sixteen blocks as a town site. He and Pettygrove then engaged in a famous coin toss to determine the name of the city. Lovejoy lost the toss, thus the city was given the name Portland rather than Boston.
He was the mayor of Oregon City in 1845, and an adjutant general in the Cayuse War of 1847-48. Lovejoy served in the provisional legislature from 1844 to 1848. In 1849, he served as speaker of the house and in 1851 he was elected a member of the council (senate) and a representative from 1854-56.

Lovejoy was a delegate from Clackamas County to the constitutional convention serving on the Committee on the Legislative Department and as chair of the Committee on Boundaries.

He remained active in numerous business interests until his death on September 10, 1882.

I assume the system doesn't accept 150-year-olds or those aged -50. If you entered it incorrectly the best thing to do is correct it...

Well, I am sure Asa put in his own birthdate, right, Asa? That was my understanding from his post anyway.

I just registered and perused the site. I surely didn't see that all they're talking about is apostrophes.

I do miss PaulD from posting on Wordcraft. I see that goofy is registered there too.

It's the old APS that is now restricted to apostrophes, I think. The new not-the-APS, has a broader brief.

Exactly. It's because the APS forum was suddenly restricted to just apostrophes that so many left for the new Not-the-APS Message Board.

So...where is everyone on Wordcraft these days? Are you all posting over there on APS? Mad

The answer to your first question is I don't know.

Do you mean Not-the-APS? So far I've only seen one person who is a member here post there (excluding me). Since he's also posted here several times since, the two demonstrably aren't mutually exclusive.

The Internet is large enough for two such sites without any competition.

Oh, arnie, I was just teasing. This is a busy time of the year, and the Wordcraft Gathering is going on. I am not surprised our site has been slow.

I wonder if they'd be interested in merging our Boards. As the saying goes, 2 heads are better than 1.

And I very much enjoyed my time here, Kalleh. I was certainly made to feel very welcome.

The boards are very different: Wordcraft is quite intellectual and has a lot of members (over 500?) and a lot of topics; Not-the-APS has only 41 members and one topic. It tends to ramble more.

Of course, anyone here would be very welcome over there (I see Kalleh has registered but not posted), and I don't mind at all if you wish to "recruit" from there. As Arnie says, he's mentioned Wordcraft a few times there, and in no sense are we rivals!

Best wishes to all here.
