Or the last one. Feudalism died last Wednesday (link). The tie-in to linguaphiles, the inhabitants of the various islands have traditional animal nicknames: Guernsey les ânes 'donkeys' in French and Jèrriais, Jersey crapauds 'toads' in French and Jèrriais, Sark corbins 'crows' in Sercquiais, Dgèrnésiais and Jèrriais, and Alderney lapins 'rabbits' in French.

Except in the case of certain Middle Eastern countries - except they pretend they are democracies!

Most historians confine feudalism to a European context.

I remember Guernsey cows from my childhood on a farm.

As I rowed ashore from me schooner close by,
A girl on the beach I did chance to espy.
Her hair it was red and her bonnet was blue And her place of abode was in Harbour LeCou.

Now, boldly I asked her to walk on the strand.
She smiled like an angel and held out her hand.
So, I buttoned me guernsey and hove 'way me chew
In the dark rolling waters of Harbour LeCou.

These first two verses of a traditional Newfoundland folksong have always had me wondering if a guernsey has BUTTONS. A quick internet search suggests that it has not! By the way,the story in the song quickly deteriorates and a bad time is had by all.

This version says ...

"Boldly I asked her to walk on the sand.

She smiled like an angel and held out her hand;

I tucked in my jersey and hove 'way me chew,

In the dark flowing waters of Harbour Le Cou."

... so it doesn't matter whether or not a guernsey has buttons. Moot.

I seem to recall that the difference between a guernsey and a jersey is where the elasticated part of the sleeve is. A jersey has it at the bottom end, near the wrists and a guernsey has it higher, above the elbow.

Now that was a new weird twist on my computer problems. I couldn't see this with the usual symptoms, and clicking on Log In didn't help at all. As I was about to log off I had one last go and lo and behold here I am.

Nothing to say on the main question, just wondered if anyone else (arnie or zm maybe) thinks that this smacks of a timing problem with the ISP software.

And experimenting has reproduced the effect with multiple attempts to click on the logon finally got me in.

Interesting, huh?

I am beginning to feel like this is Groundhog's Day here on Wordcraft. Wink

I have to say, seeing this revived thread "another one bites the dust" was a bit disconcerting...having lost Jerry recently. [I am sure he'd appreciate the irony.]
