To the fathers of the world, Happy Father's Day!
One good thing about President Obama is that he really does take fathering very seriously. I don't ever recall seeing that in a U.S. president before. |

I think that George Bush senior did all right for his son's career...

I just meant that the public gets to see a very invested father now because the kids are young. I haven't felt that before in a presidency.
Of course, I wasn't trying to make a political comment. |

I agree 1000%, Kalleh. I love it when he talks to parents in general about turning off the TV and reading to their kids. Possibly it's none of a president's business, but it's the best thing he can do for the next generation--and without spending a cent. This is a fine way to use his "bully pulpit." People like and admire him, will listen to him and follow his example. Wordmatic |

Maybe. However, I smell spin doctors lurking in the background. For instance the publication of his letter to his children has "PR stunt" written all over it. Ugh. Come on you raver, you seer of visions, Come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine! |

You could be right, and probably are. One doesn't get to be a head of state anywhere without spin doctors. I think, though, that this particular president is more likely than some of his predecessors to have thought of writing such a letter to his daughters as something they could read now, but might only appreciate later. For me, the spin part was the act of making it public now. That's a pretty lightweight "ugh," as "ugh-fulness" goes. WM |

ugh-fulness
I just love the productive features of the language, especially creative use of suffixes. "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson. Read all about my travels around the world here. Read even more of my travel writing and poems on my weblog. My new blog - which I hope to keep more up to date than my old one. And don't miss this - my unpublished book, now complete and unabridged My new photoblog The World Through A lens |

There is always some element of "spin-doctorness" in presidencies/monarchies/prime ministers/etc. these days. However, I do agree with WM that the ugh-fulness is lightweight in this case. I really think Obama and his wife do everything they can to help their kids lead healthy and normal lives. One tiny example concerns an anecdote I heard about from my colleagues. Apparently one early Saturday morning, well before Obama was elected to the presidency, my colleague was out for a walk and came across Obama and his 2 girls on bikes. She said she smiled at him, and with non-verbal communication, he indicated that she should move on and let him have private time with his kids. He could have used that as a time to campaign, but didn't. In fact, the end result was that he irritated my colleague.
