John Updike died of lung cancer yesterday. He was an icon in American literature. He not only wrote books, but as Julia Keller of the Tribune said, "clever poetry, and powerfully observant short stories and exquisitely insightful criticism of literature and the visual arts. His versatility was dazzling. His energy prodigious." He won 2 Pulitzers, 2 National Book Awards, and assorted smaller ones.
We will miss him. |

Indeed, a sad passing.
Unconnected really but at the resolution I have set on my laptop the title of this post shows up as "Goodbye to a prominent America...". I don't know what significance to draw from this. "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson. Read all about my travels around the world here. Read even more of my travel writing and poems on my weblog. My new blog - which I hope to keep more up to date than my old one. And don't miss this - my unpublished book, now complete and unabridged My new photoblog The World Through A lens |
