John Updike died of lung cancer yesterday. He was an icon in American literature. He not only wrote books, but as Julia Keller of the Tribune said, "clever poetry, and powerfully observant short stories and exquisitely insightful criticism of literature and the visual arts. His versatility was dazzling. His energy prodigious." He won 2 Pulitzers, 2 National Book Awards, and assorted smaller ones.
We will miss him.
Indeed, a sad passing.
Unconnected really but at the resolution I have set on my laptop the title of this post shows up as "Goodbye to a prominent America...".
I don't know what significance to draw from this.
"No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.
