I had assumed it to be an ancient Greek experimental metal alloy, X (Chi in Greek) + tin. But since that's not among the possibilities, I'll say it's # 4.

Well, he didn't exactly fool me; I've known of chitin just about forever. It's the principal component of the carapace of beetles, and is related to the keratin that makes up animal hair and nails. I did think that his definition was the best of the daffies, though.

Which makes the answer to my poser B; both statements are true, and unrelated.
