We also have to marvel at Newt Gingrich's ability to
pirouette
as a fiscal conservative hero now that he's a TV pundit.

Not a very good usage, in my opinion. To pirouette might be a way to describe putting a spin on something. But changing one's side on an issue isn't to twirl around in circles, unless perhaps one does it rapidly and repeatedly.
