Why did Shakespeare choose to set Hamlet in Denmark? I can see why it would not be wise of him to set it in England, but why Denmark? Why not some other real or imagined country? | ||

Because it's based on a legend about a Danish prince as told in the Gesta Danorum, a history book, by Saxo Grammaticus. —Ceci n'est pas un seing. | |||
