Today there was a documentary on the History Channel about the McCoy-Hatfield feud. During that rumpus, three McCoy members attacked a Hatfield associate, mortally wounding him. Other McCoy supporters attempted to take the perpetrators safely to McCoy territory to avoid possible retribution. However, the Hatfields intercepted the party and took the three away for punishment.

That is how newspaper accounts of events portrayed what happened. But a headline on the story said

McCoy brothers rescued from the law......

Would we use the word "rescued" in such a way today?

The CIA, the FBI, and several other agencies would. So what's your problem? Roll Eyes I am reminded of the old movie, "Ice Station Zebra."

I don't think we would, Proof. I tried to look the phrase up in Google, and except being in the Bible and other verses, I couldn't find it being used.

Using "rescue" in this way is sardonic, I would think, and so, is hardly standard! But, given that, it seems a sound construction, don't you think?
